Wining and Whistling (From Engine)

Featured Replies

Drove down to Brecon national park and Pembroke national park for a few days, car performed magnificantly and fuel consumption was excellent (managed 42 mpg down a mix motorway and very steep single track hills etc).

However, on the second day (travelling to Cardigan), the car started to develop whining/whistling noise when accelerate, it occurs from 1000 rpm to 3500 rpm (didn't try higher).

When it was on idle, it didn't make any whining noise and when I shift it to neutral at 30 mph, it also didn't make a noise. However, as soon as I engage a gear it started making that whining noise and it doesn't matter whether I accelerate or not it is still present. It also happens when I prod the accelerator standing still.

I am 100% sure it didn't come from the radio as it was turned off. The whining sound also stopped after turning off the engine for 1 hour. However, it happened again the next day after extensive turbo use (going up steep hills).

I phoned Skoda Assist, as I do not want to break down on the M4, however I later cancelled the RAC patrol as the sound was gone. I have checked water and oil level, all was fine (on max).

Any idea what this might be? I have a suspicion it is a loose or torn turbo pipe? It will be going into the dealer soon, but it won't be for a month or so..... (not using the car for the period!)

Sounds like it could be a temperature related turbo leak - but these things are difficult to troubleshoot from a distance. The turbo connections to the pipe has a sophisticated type of hose clamp, which if loose, can easiy be tightened.

My Fabia VRS whistles under heavy acceleration (informed normal thing).

Have gear-box whine in low gears 1st. - 2nd. from car being new, similar to my very very old mini days.(assumed normal)

Hi,

Thanks for both the replies. It happens in both acceleration (not hard, in all gears) and also in gear deceleration (also all gears).

It is also intermittent, didn't happen all the way from Wales to London, but happened twice in Wales.

The interesting thing is there is no power loss and the turbo whistle (hard acceleration) still exist.

Thanks.
