Variable Service Resetting Tool Advice Required

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2005 Octavia 1.9 pd which I wish to keep on variable life servicing.

I want to carry out the service myself and reset the indicator so as to keep it on variable service schedule. Problem is this requires a tool to be plugged into the ecu socket to reset.

Looking around ebay and the internet there are various ones on offer. I already have a shark self tune that reads fault codes so I am only after a service light resetter.

Can anyone recommend a cheap one? I have done a search around this forum but not found a answer.

Thanks

Are you sure? I'm sure I've read in the handbook how to reset the service indicator, or is that maxi-dot only?

Hi

I have one of these:

VAG 405

I didn't buy it on Amazon but I wrote a review there. It reads VAG and generic codes and resets service indicators incluing variable.

I think it is available as Sealy or Autel - all the same thing.

If you do that the service is set to fixed and NOT variable - so you will need a reader.

On a similar but separate note....will that device let me re-code my Octavia for all the tow bar requirements - disable parking sensors, disable car's fog light, adjust stability and braking control etc.?

Good value if so.

If not, what would I need?

No it will not. It reads the codes stored in all the modules fitted to the car. It shows a plain text decription and code number. It will allow you to reset these codes. It will let you set the service intervals.

There are some "diagnostic tests" (not a lot of use).

Cool, that's what I thought. Not worth me investing just now then!

The only 100% reliable tool I know of is VCDS.

Via the dash pod or some cheap readers will simply set you to a fixed regime. Once this has happened only VCDS or a dealer can change you back.

Agree with the above. I reset an A3 on a variable service using VCDS today. Was very simple, VCDS is a brilliant bit of kit and software.

Thanks FriendlyFire,

I spotted that and wondered how good it was and wondered if the reviews were genuine.

Sounds ideal.
