Help! Smoke! 2.0 Tdi PD 140

Featured Replies

Can anybody help or point me in the right direction with my dads new car? He's just bought an 06 reg Octavia 2.0 Tdi PD 140 Laurin & Klement.

The cars done 77k with full service history. He picked it up from the dealers last night and as I followed him home I noticed a small puff of blue smoke from the exhaust when he was pulling out of junctions etc. Today I went to show him how to work the climate control etc and as we were sat in the car with the engine running I noticed a bit of blue/grey smoke blowing past the window of the car. I blipped the throttle a few times and there was a huge cloud of blue smoke blow out of the exhaust, every time I blipped the throttle a large cloud of smoke was blown out the back.

When we test drove the car 2 weeks before It didnt smoke at all, apart from a very fine mist like all diesels when you boot it.

It has been for an oil and filter change last week at a local "vw specialist" so Im wondering if theyve put any old oil in it, rather than the specific VAG PD oil that the car should have. Does this sound right or could it be something more sinister? ( The garage is getting a phonecall about it at 9am)

Thanks in adavance

Sounds like the turbo has let go tbh.

Oh dear, Strange that it was fine on test drive, ah well, Ill be ringing the dealer tomorrow morning with the good news

these turbos seem to let go after being parked up for a while they seem to starve themselves of oil. the 140 seems to be a bit of a problem engine with regards to turbos.

I've just picked it up from my dads and driven in 8 miles to my house. For the first 4 miles or so it was like a 2 stroke engine with all the blue smoke, I kept giving it some stick whenever I could and it seems to have fixed itself, leaving it parked for a bit now then going to see if it smokes again later. Even when you blipped the throttle when stood it'd send blue smoke signals

Have you checked the level on the dipstick?

They might have put a drop to much oil in.

Or if the Turbo oil seals are going it will be using it up at an alarming rate!

If it is making that amount of blue smoke I'd be keeping a keen eye on those oil levels ;)

On way back to the dealers now. It's worse from cold or, like now, crawling in traffic . Setting off in first gives a puff of blue smoke yet when up to speed there's hardly anything now

Oh and the level is fine

Surprise surprise, the dealer says they all do that and there's nothing wrong with it. It's staying there until it's sorted, no car burns that much oil

They dont all do that & we all know that.

Take care when driving a heavily smoking diesel, if its the turbo letting go it will be pumping engine oil directly into the engine, hense the smoke but its also a fuel that a diesel can run on. There have been cases when it completely lets go pumping oil into the engine & it free revs to destruction. The rev limiter in these situations does not work. the only way to stop it is to try & brake until you stop, hard with a diesel on full chat or block the exhaust if stationary, switching off wont do anything

I think that Dealer is talking through his botty.

...or just drop the clutch in a high gear.

If the dealer claims they all do it then I'm sure they'd be happy to fire up one of their used Octavia's on their forecourt to prove it?

Just posted this video on youtube of it as we picked it up. Apparently it had been slightly over filled with oil. 95% of the time when pulling away in first gear, the engine is cold in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRQSbHm75cc

I spoke to the dealer on the phone and he said he followed an 11 plate van that did the same. Dont think he was impressed when I told him my 11 plate van didnt smoke at all, Ever and yes it is a diesel.
