Changing engine maps whilst driving

News is everywhere but the article I chose is HERE

Part of a new system called "ECO PRO" from BMW. Seems like quite an improvement to get a 5-series to under 120 CO2. I was thinking though, could you adjust the engine mapping to such a degree that you could dynamically change it so whilst using 8th gear in an autobox, you could be doing 1500 revs at say 80mph?

Combine this technology with the alleged improvement that laser firing spark plugs will bring, could we see even more refinement in emissions and MPG?

Yes all good stuff. I would like the 8 speed gearbox. In my car 7th gear is 29 mph/1000 and 3500 rpm ie half way up the rev range, is 102 mph so very tall but it could pull and even taller higher 8th gear as torque plateau starts at 1500 rpm.

VAG have led the small petrol engine market for some years now hence all the awards from the Internation Engine awards where as BMW has won the diesel awards but it is BMW's cost base being in the Euro zone that has made it hard to swallow in the UK market where a BMW 2 litre diesel having similar performance to the TSIs but costing more than half as much again.

What percentage improvement can laser spark plus give you? With current petrol prices it may well be worth doing as is 8 speed gearboxes.

You could quite easily have a system that will change engine mapping while driving, but altering gear ratios would be a lot more difficult!!

I'm sure I can remember Jabbasport had a system where you could change the map whilst you are driving with a push of a button. I can remember seeing a video of it. However I have a feeling all the map did was change the boost pressure.

You could do it with a CVT auto box.

You really need to talk to jabba as they showed the map switch working by a boost gauge as this was the easiest way to show it.

Tbh switchable maps are not new, and alls BMW have done to the above car is stick a stupidly long top gear in, which ant driver/mechanic knows that's all you need for mpg. But you suffer on power as it is sitting so far out of the power band you are pretty stuffed if you have to slow and getback upto speed in that gear....

I'm a bit confused about this... Isn't switchable maps whilst driving what the little M button on the M series cars has been doing the whole time? Just for performance rather then Eco?
