Grill surround

Featured Replies

Hi everybody.

Just received second hand grill from ebay to replace mine which has been smashed since I got the car, question is do I de-chrome the surround while changing the grill, and do I go matt black or match it to the rest of the car?

Any of your thoughts or pics of black cars with this done would be appreciated

Colour match looks good

looks good  did you use bleach to remove the chrome or sand it then use primer over the chrome?

Sanded off all the Chrome with regular sand paper then used wet and dry to smooth it over

Cleaned it with white spirit

2 to 3 thin coats of primer

3 coats of black magic

3 or 4 coats of laquer

I did mine outside which was a mistake as dust and bugs stick to it so do it in the garage if u can

20 to 30 minutes between coats

Thin coats to avoid bubbling

Waited 24 hours after last coat before recurring back on car

Good luck! :)

Sorry, stupid predictive text! Refitting not recurring

I think colour coated on the Black Magic paint looks better. I have matte black wrapped on mine and I love it but my car is silver :p

Thanks for that guys  i'll get some spray and give it a go, might have to wait a couple of weeks as the wife is due to give birth any day, i'll post some pics when done unless I make a complete balls up of it of course :giggle:

I did the same as above. Used normal sand paper to take the top layer of chrome off then smoothed it down using wet and dry but kept it fairly rough to allow the primer to key to it. I tried the bleach method but just couldn't see it working quickly. Take your time its a patient job!
