DSG K.O'd ?

Featured Replies

Don't know if this has been found by anyone else but basically the issue is as follows...

I was coming out of the village I stay in and started slowing for the junction. Stopped, had a quick look, road was clear (luckily). Started pulling out to go across the main road and onto a back road so thought i'd pop it into manual for a bit of faster paced driving. As I moved the stick across into manual, the throttle became useless and just simply revved the engine. I couldn't change up or down gears and was stuck in the middle of a very busy main road, usually driven on by very heavy vehicles (lorrys and the like). I simply popped the stick back into D and it juddered and went back into gear?

Quite scary to think had this happened with me nipping across the road thinking I had plenty of time in front of traffic, things could have gone a little differently... =/

Thought I'd make note of this as it freaked the F**K out of me!

Be thankful if anyone could shed some light.

Cheers

Mines had similar but I had to put it into park then back into D... I did post it up here if you look at my topics...

I'm new to the DSG but notice in the video that even though you press the accelerator the Selector lever lock green light is on.

Page 97 of the new handbook Latest Manual talks about this and from what I remember about the few miles I've driven, I comes on as a reminder to apply the footbrake so that the box can do it's selection.

Not sure if this helps

Going back to the OP, are you supposed to change from auto to manual whilst on the move?

Yes, you can do it whenever you like, I did it frequently on my test drive.

Yep can change when you like, can attest to this having driven 3 different DSG's

Not even that bad, mate. Thinking about it now though, I did get the green warning light about putting your foot on the brake, I think I just moved it into Neutral then back into D and it went because I never came to a full stop, but was literally rolling at an almost standstill

Thanks for the responses guys, going to try to replicate the issue and if I can, i'll get some footage up here, and no doubt go have a nag at the dealers and see what they know. :)

it could simply be that the brake wasn't on hard enough, or the car wasn't quite stopped or something that caused the gearbox to decide not to engage drive for safety reasons....

Yeah sounds quite like what it was, I did almost take my foot off the brake and engage manual almost simultaneously but I didn't really think it would have made much of a difference, i'll be going to get something fixed on the interior soon anyways so I'll ask the guys at the dealership (although i'll probably know more about it than they will  )

I havn't used full manual mode yet lol :)

I havn't used full manual mode yet lol :)

I've been using it more and more, especially right for blasting down your fave back road, where you can keep the gears you want, I like to have instant 'bite' when the gas goes down rather than a gear change... if really blasting though, sport is almost as good, allowing you to focus more on the steering....

I must admit I havn't really had a proper play with mine, used the paddles etc but slowly building up to sport mode :) I told myself wait for 1000 miles before using it. I have been building the revs up each time so its getting used to speed but at a more sedate pace :D lol

RIGHT!!!! IT HAPPENED AGAIN!! Think i've sussed the issue. I clicked the down paddle a few times as i was nearing the junction and braking. As I was doing this, the car also dropped a gear or 2 its self, so I clicked a couple of times too many, as I started moving, it was almost like the car was looking to change down again, and had somehow crashed the DSG??? Very VERY odd! Think i'm going to take a trip to the dealers at the weekend and ask about it! again, I was very lucky nothing was coming at the junction!

once is forgetable, twice is an issue, good luck, keep us updated.

I've had this a few times aswell now. Always when in manual pulling upto a junction. Look to hear what they say aswell.

I seem to remember that the paddles are pre-select instructions and are successive. So, clicking the down 2 times tells the computer "please change down when safe for engine revs, then down again when safe for engine revs. With two requests saved, if you asked for one more while it still had one instruction saved, it could well have put it into a "change down" instruction but you had already stopped.

Does this make sense.

DSGs do seem to have software issues. I recently borrowed a friend's six month old Superb with DSG and managed to stall it at a T junction in D. The problem was that once it was stalled, it didn't appear to want to go back into D once I'd started the engine - went in on the third attempt.

Speaking with my friend he's stalled it twice now, and the garage says it's a known problem. Was the junction slightly uphill? Did you come to a stop then suddenly try to pull away? Seems to be a combination of timing between the brake and the accelerator, but the circumstances are hard to repeat reliably.
