Skoda Fabia 1.4 flat/dead spot / hesitation

Featured Replies

This is a bit of an on going problem with my Fabia, when the accelerator is pressed there appears to be a hesitation / dead spot until the revs pick up.

Anyone shed any light on it?

I had this, flat spotting at 3000 ish revs then pick back up,all be it a different engine. (1.9tdi vrs).

My problem was that the pipe running from the maf to turbo was nearly off, leaving an air leak. Pushed it on flush and it's ok.

It could be maf related, so check all pipes are sitting right and are not split.

Don't think MAF is on petrol engines? Not sure though >.<

No MAF on the petrol engine - if it's anything it is likely to be either the MAP, or the lambda probe... Or the throttle body needing a clean.

Least invasive option would be the throttle body - after which it'll be a fair bit more work.

You had VCDS/VAGCOM on it to check any fault codes?

Only fault code that comes up is to do with the power steering sensor.

Took spark plugs out earlier and the far left one was coated in oil (not sure if oil has seeped through form the filler cap) have cleaned it and swapped it for one of the others (which were clean) to see if the oil comes back.

Not sure if this has something to do with it but I guess it certainly doesn't help :/

Piston rings? Would explain oily spark plug. Do you use super unleaded?

There was always a certain amount of lag between pushing the accelerator and getting a response on the 16 valve engines when the Fabia first came out. It shouldn't do any harm to clean the throttle body and reset it

Nah just unleaded.

Oh right I see and clean the throttle body?

As Fordfan said it's pretty typical, there are flash updates for the ECU though that make it a lot better.

I'm assuming that means taking it to Skoda?

Yeah, the 1.4 16v updates are on disc, don't think they are online. Needs to be hooked up to diag equipment and upload carried out.

Oh yes. ¬_¬

Hy guys, my car has the same problem, but after 3k it goes, this is the same as me no error code on the computer so i advice something i did and work to my advantage:

remove MAP sensor and clean out with electronic cleaning solution (the one with no oil)

remove Lambda sensor and clean out (i used white vinegar 100% and let it sit over night shaking it every once in a while and a lot of stuff came out)

replace spark plug and gap them correctly (.70) if you get the three electrode type better.

clean throttle body butterfly and replace air filter

Change fuel filter

reset computer (60) with cable

after that if you still feel hesitation is time to take out the injectors and give them a very good cleaning and it did help for me to put Marvel Mistery Oil in with the oil and give it a good italian tune up. (drove 180 km @ 140Km/h)

Impressive amount of tinkering hehe!

I'll have to do this lot now i've created a catch can for the crankcase return to air feed - I fail to see how returning oily gases to the manifold where the map is will help matters... Not got around to cleaning throttle body/air intake/manifold yet since, but it does feel a lot nicer, then again it could just be good ol' placebo effect.

I'll post up a howto probably next weekend once i'm all cleaned up hahaha - nothing that anyone hasn't done before, but useful if it has all the part #s (got a shedload of homebase part numbers to put into the howto!)

remove the injector as i did, you´ll be suprised at the gunk that´s in there

Mini update; changed the EGR Valve due to it throwing up the EML on the dash; went on a run and EML light came back on saying there was a problem with the EGR system this time.

Found a thread on here and decided to clean the throttle body which was covered in carbon underneith.

Acceletartor lag still seems to be there and seems to be drinking petrol even though it's saying I'm getting 32 MPG (or there abouts).

Fuel filter has also been changed too.

Got it booked in with Skoda on Wednesday to run diagnostics so will see what that brings up (if anything).
