Repair or Scrap?!

Featured Replies

I have a 2001 Y-reg Octavia vRS with 108,000 miles on the clock.

It has the following things wrong with it:

- Aircon completely broken (compressor gone)

- Front wheel bearing very noisy

- Secondary airpump broken (and disconnected)

- Engine warning light on (mechanic thinks this is due to the airpump having been disconnected affecting emissions)

- Exhaust sounds like its on the way out (apart from a small section of the exhaust replaced under warranty, the exhaust has not been changed from new)

- Front bumper knackered from catching on kerbs too many times when parking (!)

Still goes pretty quick, has full service history, but I'm going to replace it and I'm not sure if it is worth repairing any of these faults or just scrapping?

thanks.

The way I see it:

- secondary airpump, replace the broken rivets with nuts and bolts (and reconnect)

- MIL, well see if fixing the secondary airpump fixes or, or see if a member nearby will scan your car

- Wheel bearing - get it replaced (it is worth paying someone to do this, as they can be a bit of a PITA)

Aircon - wait and see - if your selling it it may well be easier to let the new owner deal with it.

Exhaust - my 2001 TDI is on 185k and still on the original (looking a bit dodgy in places though).

aircon - not really an issue unless aircon is important to you or future buyer

bearing - fix it

EML light - likely to be pump. No harm if it isn't connected or working, so suggest do nothing apart from verify it is the fault code related to the pump.

Exhaust - suggest getting someone to confirm one way or another.

Bumper - who cares, unless you really care about the looks of your car.

Not sure why scrap is an option as even with these issues it has resale value?

Inside the a/c compressor pulley, there is a clutch plate. When you switch on the a/c does the centre nut start to turn?

If not, it could be a simple wiring problem.

Thanks for the replies.

I found part of the a/c pump sheared off and lying on the drive, so think that is pretty terminal.

Only reason I asked about scrapping is that I wasn't sure if the car had enough value to warrant further repairs prior to sale.

If what you found looks like the plate in the centre of the pulley (see picture) then it is the clutch plate. Look at the end of compressor spindle. Does it have any thread left? If it does, you can bolt the clutch plate back on.

Probably needs a new pump, the clutch plate coming off normally is the end of if....

It starts, it runs, it drives = it has value. Fix the bearing and verify the reason the MIL is on... and then go from there.
