hi everyone. My yeti has finally been built.ordered 12/1/11. Thinking of either changing the standard tyres to all seasons or buying 16" moon alloys with winter tyres in size 215/60/16. any advice would be most welcome. Also any ideas as to the best price moon alloys can be purchased.many thanks. pete davey

What is your typical driving? Roads, mileage, usage? Commuting, work, social?

Depends on the answers to the above as to what might be suggested.

Sorry, no idea about winter/all season tryes.

I'm on the standard alloys and tyres, but when the tyres need changing I will be opting for winter tyres as I live nearly 2 miles all uphill, and in all the chilly, snowy weather we had at the beginning of the year it will be worth it. :yes:

i have opted for a spare set of Moon Alloys for the winter tyres, the best price i could get was £187.00 each being 10% off the RRP.

Good luck - hope you can find them at an even better price.

As a general rule steels wheels are favoured for winter with the 216/60 R16 tyres. I bent 2 steel wheels in an incident on the M25 in January, which would have left me needing 2 new alloys if I had them. The steel wheels were subtly (club hammer emoticon-0140-rofl.gif) put back into shape and re balanced and away I went.

Moon alloys for summer tyres yes! just like TP.

By the way the alloy wheels are the same weight as the steel ones so not 'light weight' emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

hi bahnstomer its a 170 elegance mainly used by the other half.I plan on using it if we have lots of snow for work.

thaks rockhopper it comes on 17" wheels and i dont think steel wheels would go down very well with mrs style.

So the mrs style is corroded alloys due to the snow/rain/ice?emoticon-0140-rofl.gif My set of steels cost less than 1 moon alloy......

Ok; perhaps a controversial recommendation .....

..... save your self the cost of a set of moon alloys c. £750 plus the cost of 16" winter tyres and replace your OE tyres with 225/50 17 All Season tyres.

I know they will be a compromise but in the wet/cold/snow they will be 80% as good as winter tyres (and 50% better than summer tyres) and in the summer they will be 90% as good as 'summer tyres'.

You can then sell your OE 225/50 17s to someone on the forum to offset the cost of the All Season tyres. :thumbup:

Hi I had the dunlops sports on my 1.2, when I ordered my 110 4x4 asked my dealer if they would take off the dunlops and fit goodyear all season tyres to save the wheel changing every year and the cost of 4 wheels and tyres, and the dunlops are not good in the cold, all it cost me was the difference between the price of the tyres at the time £7.50.

Although i have not driven them in any snow yet I have found them better in the wet, handling so far as good if not better than the dunlops and are as quite as the dunlops, even though they are aggressive looking tyres. hope to get to try them in the snow this winter :giggle:

Sorry no experience as I have gone the 'winter tyre' route in OE 225/50 17 size.

Suggest you google around the 'tyre review' websites, generally plenty of comments there.

All have been positive and lets face it, last winter was a cracking test for them. I have yet to hear a user on this forum say they are poor. My tyres will need changing around September time and I am going to go down the all season route as well. The all season route sounds a fair compromise to make but before anyone bites my head off I am aware that it is a compromise.

wakav as mentioned above is running the vectors along with CT17 and mbrock is using the eNtyre, which is more a cold wet weather option (does not have the full winter snowflake).

The Quatrac is only available in the 16" tyre size for the Yeti.

Oh by the way I'm in the steel wheel for winter camp like rockhopper; we get to many cavonous pot holes round here to risk alloys. My Dad has a Superb II with 18" alloys one of which is now slightly mis-shaped from a winter pot hole :S

I have been looking into getting winter tyres for my BMW as I won't now be able to get a yeti until at least after the winter. After a lot of online research looking at anecdotal feedback, user reviews and tyre tests I found that there were two tyres that stood out as consistently getting the highest score/accolades:

1. Continental Wintercontact TS830

2. Vredestein Snowtrac 3

The Contis come first as they seem to be slightly better on dry roads but there is not much difference in the wet/snow/ice. The Vredesteins are cheaper though.

I must point out that I have not tried these tyres my self, this is just the opinion that I have formed from reading up about them. :)

I have been very happy with my set-up, which you can see below.

My personal reasoning for the alloys in winter is that they are machined and perfectly round - which stamped steel wheels are not. The winters have seen two long trips down to Costa del Sol and back and have performed well in all conditions from rather deep snow to high speed at summer temperatures. The winter tyres were selected for the best possible wet performance, as that is where you are most likely to experience a need for the ultimate grip. they do have a slightly higher slip angle than the summer tyres, but that is only noticeable in high speed dry cornering.

I run the summer tyres at 2.3 bar all around for normal load situations and the winters at 2.4 bar. It seems to provide an even wear pattern both front and back, rotated front to back at each change from winter/summer.

The sumer tyres absolutely stunk at straight line braking on simulated winter conditions on a skid pad - but were OK as long as there was an angle component involved, such as in cornering.

I have not experienced any of the pitching/harsh ride with the 16" set-up that some with the 172 50-series have complained about.

they are fitting the goodyear all season tyres. picking it up next tuesday so no new reg year. how much less do you think it will be worth in say three years.
