Fabia VRS Boot stinks!

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Opened the boot of my Fabia for the first time in about a week (and since the mental rain) and the boot bloody stinks! Not sure how to describe it... maybe a mix of mould and cheese! The inside of the car is not as bad so I am thinking it must be the boot.

I don't think anything has been spilt in it and if I am not mistaken it seems to be the lining/felt itself that smells? Nothing feels that damp so I am little confused, could it be to do with the mad driving rain getting in?

Any ideas would be great, I will keep everything open tonight to air it out, wonder how easy it is to remove all the lining in the boot and get it dried?

Cheers

Dead easy to remove the boot lining, but there's a cardboard type base above the spare wheel that can go mouldy very quickly. I took mine off and washed it with disenfectant poured some Zoflora on it to make it smell nice again. From memory I think it's easier to remove the liner by whipping out the rear seats.

I have heard that the rear lights have let in water in on some people.

With all of the linings removed, on a dry day it might be a worthwhile experiment to get a hosepipe on the back and see if you can see any signs of water coming in.

Thanks guys, will get it removed tonight, if it does turn out to be a leak around the lights is it a cheap fix for a garage? Also it seems to smell on both sides... seems odd that both lights seals may go doesnt it?

Thanks guys

Quick question, do it have anything to do with the rear window spray? Mine is broken, just wondered if that would be leaking in the boot... especially down the left or right hand side of the boot (seems to smell worse at the side)

Cheers

Yes that would certainly explain it.

Have a look at this guide

Yes i had that problem on my Corsa.... if the rear jet isn't working it may well be leaking into the car.

This happened to my Brothers skoda fabia about 2yrs ago and it still smells slightly like mouldly windscreen wash

p.s. whats does SMIC mean>>

also what does SWAMBO(something like that) mean??

Thanks guys, really hoping that is the problem... is it an hour job for a garage? Or longer you reckon?

Right took another look yesterday, after taking everything out i caught a good smell of the carpet at the bottom of the boot (with the cardboard attached) and it STINKS! I find it hard to believe but I think that is causing the whole smell that has gone through the car... is that possible?! Firstly how do I take that carpet out, is seems to go under the seats? And secondly could anything from the car have leaked into there? It doesn't seem like a stale water smell... more like 3 year old milk!

If anyone could let me know that would be great!

To get the carpet fully out you have to take the back seats out. Taking them out takes about 10 minutes.

Fold the bottom foam bits down and you'll see how to unclip them. Pull the backs forward as if to fold them, and you'll see the clip on each side. Release the top of the clip with a flat headed screwdriver and they should then just lift out.

Perfect, will give that a try, hopefully removing the carpet will get rid of the stink!

Anyone got any ideas where it could have come from? There doesnt seem to be any pipes around the bottom part of the boot... wonder if the wife spilt some milk and never told me! Anything I should look out for? Want to try as much as possible before taking it to the garage to get charged 300+

Mine was stinking when I got the car, took the carpet out and cleaned everything. Never had a problem again. I think the cardboard bit is bad for smells once it gets wet.

This really helped me. I have a fabia estate and we were going crazy trying to locate this vomit smell. it was because I left some wet material in the boot for 3 days. the water must have ended up in the hardboard! thanks!

Amendment: after taking the carpet out, it now has come to light it was a red herring; the smell was in fact coming from the back seats but must have been caused by water.
