So what happened to my pads and disks

Featured Replies

I changed the rear pads and disks for genuine parts about 2 yr ago

They are completely dead now !!!

The original ones lasted 6 yrs and still had meat left on them

Now I fitted these myself and they have always moo-ed, did I do something wrong ?? Maybe something to do with the wind back process ??

Before anyone says I drive too fast, I'm slower these days if anything lol

What disc/pad combo is it? Dead as in, no life left in the disc or pad?

Does yours have ESP?

Genuine VW parts 256(iirc) mm disks and matching pads

No ESP.

The pads have about two weeks left and the disks are scored quite bad

lack of use and corrosion on disc face could cause this

prob more to do with a change in pad material and disc material to wear out faster ;-) so you have to buy more often......

you would think it would be something to do with sticking calipers maybe?? even driven hard the rears aren't used that much

Would I be looking for hot wheels, hubs etc

Both at the same time ?? Rare ??

does seem pretty odd for both to go, but stranger things have happened. little money saver for you though VAG now have an economy range, same product without the frills ie nicely finished, branded box etc, trade on a set of rear pads is 12.92 inc vat for the rs, for reference part number is JZW 698 451 C

Were the handbrake cables loosened (behind the handbrake) whilst you changed the disks/pads and then adjusted afterwards?

Balls .......... Bought some jurids for more than that from GSF

Errr no ........Like I say I fitted so thats probably it lol

Probably will be this as if you had mooing to, as the pads will be binding. I almost forgot this when i changed mine. How many clicks on your handbrake.

I would guess also that pad material used today would wear quicker. Easy way for suppliers to make more money.

Could it be to do with EBD? Doesn't EBD shift braking to the rear if one is just pottering around (less than 40mph) generally?

No that I know of. EBD should work with the ABS system, to in effect even up the breaking forces, when it's necessary to come to a stop in the shortest time and space possible, whilst still in a straight line. It should not come into effect when 'pottering'.

That's why I asked about ESP, as that does use the rear brakes to maintain stability, when driving beyond what the car thinks of the limits of grip, adhesion and stability. I know of some people (Shifty comes to mind with his Mk2 Octy) who managed to wear out quite a few rear sets because of this :)

What people fail to realise is that manufacturer's original parts are a superior quality to aftermarket stuff. This is especially true of tyres and exhaust systems. You will never get the same life from them after the original ones have been replaced. Just because the replacement parts come from the main dealer does not mean they are the same quality as the original fitted parts.

Tyres? :S

How are tyres that the manufacturer has fitted on the production line going to be any different to those you can buy from a tyre distributor? I understand your general point, just about....(with many, many exceptions where aftermarket items are vastly superior, including exhaust systems!) - but definitely not to your point about tyres.

Give me a bell mate if you need help fittin rears brakes. I am off on wed and thurs so can pop up with the tools.

Not true at all. The tyres we buy are not the same as those fitted to new vehicles. They are are different specification which are not available for joe public to buy. This is most likely why the first set of tyres on any car always last the longest.

Right. Any proof of this?

Not "proof" as such, but I've heard the same thing completely independantly.

Seems complete madness that tyre manufacturers would go to the cost and trouble of coming up with a different specification and compound, just so they can be fitted to new vehicles - and then not offer these for sale elsewhere, in other sales channels.

our disks and pads are exactly as what your car left the factory with, it wouldnt be cost effective to make two types

tyres are different yes, if you go on camskill you can buy some of these oe tyres.

the reason they are made is tyre co's can strike a big deal with a manufacturer, and can tailor the compound etc so the car manufacturer is happy and the the tyre co get a big order for some financial security.

tread patterns will not be changed, but the compound as stated above could be.

yup 7 is too many lol, mine is 1 and you feel them and 2-3 is full on. and they dont bind even with the drivers one being a bit sticky on the lever.

I made that mistake mate and forgot to push the lever back to the stop when I did it the day before the MOT lol, luckilly the place I went lent me their tools and let me do it in the shop before the MOT while they carried on and dit other things lol.

I have the GF car to do tonight. Then its a treat for mine tomoz with a full degunge.
