something strange going on with gear selection on my '98 Octavia TDI. I can't get reverse or second gears - everything seems to be one position over, ie 1st where reverse should be, 3rd where first should be, etc. I'm thinking that it's an adjustment issue. I've had a trawl through the site & have found the dieselgeek video, but that appears to be for 2000 & onwards models. Haynes says that prior to 04/99 adjustment needs special tools. is this something I can do myself, or do I need to pay someone to sort it?

had a poke around under the bonnet this evening & it looks like a pretty simple problem. the swivelly bit on the engine end of my side-to-side gear selector cable has snapped off

the break is just above where it is bolted on

does anyone know whether it is possible to replace just this part, or whether an entire new gear selector cable is required? & where I would buy the replacement part(s)?

any help much appreciated
