Hi, my steering rack is leaking really badly for the seels so im going to have to change it. ive looked in the Haynes manual and it doesnt seem a hard job but i have a few questions.

Ive read on here that there are two different makes of rack and there could be an issue with the pump not fitting if you get the two different types can anyone confurm this for me if so how can i tell which one i already have so i get the right one ?

I understand that there are other cars that use the same rack like the n6 polo and one of the seat ibeza can someone please tell me which ones ?

The haynes mentions changing a seal but i cant seem to find a part name for it can anyone point me in the right direction ?

i know its not idell but i need to get one from the breakers as i cant afford a recon one at the moment is there anything i need to look out for ?

There's also two types of sensor in the racks which aren't compatible. I got a 2007 one from a scrappy to fit to my 2001 car, and it wouldn't have it. I think the cross over was 2003/2004, but be sure to check that first.

thanks for that m8, ive had to leave it for now till i can get more info, im quite surprized really, i can find loads of threads with people with leaky power streering but theres not really much info on doing the job and the different racks, i take it that most people just get the garage to do it.

I tried to get the part myself, but failed as the sensor was the wrong type. Then got the garage to order a reckon rack, which leaked, then got a proper new one from Skoda, and everything I looked into I've mostly forgotten. I can remember, there are two different makes, TOYO (or something) and TWR/TRW. If you give the dealer/TPS your vin number, they should be able to help pinpoint which one is needed.

Have read on this site, if steering rack leaks THATS IT!! no repairs can be carried out.

Suggest get Skoda steering rack direct, taking the guessability out of the equation.

Not sure if old rack carries a reduction in price when buying a new rack??
