Time to replace my front disks?

Featured Replies

My brake wear indicator came on a few weeks ago, and I knew the friction material was low, so I ordered some new pads and disks from Eurocar parts when they had 30% off.

When the car was MOT'd the tester commented I would be needing some new disks soon - pointing to a "rust spot". However having taken one of the disks off I see these "spots" appear opposite each other, so are they wear indicators? These (Brembo) disks have only been on the car for a couple of years and just the one set of pads.

I have noticed a reasonable degree of steering wheel vibration somewhere between light and moderate breaking, so I am wondering if the disks are knackered.....

Are you referring to the two holes on opposite sides of the disc face?

Aren't they wear indicators designed to disappear when the disc has worn below the minimum thickness?

Well I wondered about that, so in theory the disc should be good for another set of pads. I was just wondering why vibration seemed to have set in recently. I guess I could fit new pads and see how it goes. If bad I could fit a new pair of discs.

Yeap they are wear indicators, only seam to get them on Brembo discs!

If youve got vibration itll be the discs, 312 discs seem to get a wobble when they wear a bit.

Looking at them id replce them with the pads and go for everything new

After all 312's arent expensive, id fit Pagid ones from euro, thats what i run with my Porsche 4 pots and never had any issues with them

I bought some Pagid discs from Euro Car Parts along with 2 sets of pads. I guess I could treat the old girl to some new front discs at the same time and consider it job done for a few more years.

Surpised that your discs might have warped though after 2 years and on the same pads. I always considered Brembo to be a decent make. Maybe i'm getting old but i'm sure discs used to outlast a number of pads and quite alot of miles (e.g. 50k+). Maybe as Dannyboy says the disc size makes warping more likely after minimal wear. You haven't gone past the first wear indicator yet.

Last time I changed the discs (and pads) was back in Feb 2007, so quite a while. I have always had several pads changes before changing discs (on previous cars), so I am rather disappointed that vibrations have just started occurring. They have got somewhat worse over the last few weeks.

I never brake hard (waste of energy) and don't sit with my foot on the brake either after slowing down, so I am rather disappointed if they have warped.

Records suggest the mileage was about 110,000 (give or take a thousand), but if I have got 75k from the pads, I would expect 150k from the discs. I only changed the discs back then due to a vibration under braking.

Put new discs on.... they look rather white in the pictures though! I took the time to re-tap the grub screw hole for holding the disk in place when the wheel bolts aren't in. When I previously changed the discs I could not get the nearside one undone. Still all removed sorted now

Defo wear indicators, bought some of those Brembo discs from ECP a couple of months ago.

Well the Brembos are now on my worktable, and I guess will soon be heading off to the tip along with my the previous set as I can't see me refitting them.

It will be interesting to see how you get on with your Brembos.

I'm not heavy on the brakes, it's only the second time the front discs and pads had been changed in about 97k miles, so the old discs had done about 70k.

I do find I get get a bit of judder from the brakes but a few quick stops from 60 normally gets rid of the judder.
