Stunning and Original VW Golf MK2 GTI 8v Low Mileage w/FSH

Here we have my 3dr Golf MK2 GTI 8v. I have enjoyed every minute of ownership (2 years) as this really is a practical classic. It took me a long while to find one that had low mileage, was original and unmodified and had excellent paint and body for age.

A bit of history about the car, when I bought it 2 years ago the gentleman explained that he only had the car for a couple of months and bought it from an old boy from Liverpool who bought it from new. The only reason why the original owner sold it was because he felt he was getting too old to drive it, as he bought it when he retired. It even still has the original Dealer Plates and Tax Disc Holder from new! The car comes complete with a Full Service History from both the original owner and myself, even the original bill of sale is included from 1989.

When viewing the car, you can tell that it has been well looked after and garaged throughout its life as all the window rubbers and door seals still have the glossy shine to them. The paintwork still has its deep shine and all the plastics are still black and with no scuffs on any of the bumpers or door side strips.

The interior is mint, has never been smoked in and the rear seats have never been sat in! It has the iconic “Plaid” seats and black headlining that the new Golf GTI’s have now gone back to. All switches, dials, heater blower, original radio and MFA (Trip Computer) still work. The aerial may need replacing at some point but I have found a genuine replacement and it will be supplied with the car. The correct VW rubber mats are also present. Rear parcel shelf is uncut. The only slight issue with the interior is that the driver’s seat is starting to signs of wear i.e. slight bolster wear which is very common amongst Golf GTI’s of this era.

Mechanically this car is brilliant. Even after 107,000 miles (4863 miles a year on average) it’s still feels like new and is a pleasure to drive. It has been 100% reliable. The engine runs sweet, idles nice, still pulls well through the gears like a GTI should and never uses any oil or water in-between services, (oil and filter change every 6,000 miles). The gearbox still feels tight and is free from the common 2nd gear crunch found on thrashed and neglected MK1 and MK2 Golf GTI’s. The exhaust is completely standard and gives that classic GTI purposeful tone.

Over the course of my ownership this car has wanted for nothing but as I take pride in my cars, if any parts either looked old or could potentially wear out soon I replaced them with Genuine VW parts, money no object.

Here’s a list of what it’s had done,

• New Avon Tyres all round, had tracking done at the same time

• New water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, metal water pipe and G12 coolant water flush

• Injection system service fully cleaned out Idle Stabilisation Valve (ISV) and throttle body. Replaced injection vacuum lines

• Fuel/Air Mixture and timing set professionally setup on a rolling road back to factory standard

• New spark plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm

• New tappets and rocker cover gasket

• New cam belt, cam tensioner and fan belt

• Breather system fully cleaned

• Brake fluid flush and new brake fluid reservoir

• New rear calipers (1 month ago)

• Brake discs and pads all round (1 month ago)

• New fuel filter

• New shock absorbers, top mounts, bottom mounts all round

• Fully wax oiled underneath

• Sump taken off to be cleaned inside, sump gasket replaced

• Regular oil changes with VW filters

• Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser fitted

• Gear linkage bush kit fitted

• Gearbox oil change

So as you can see, this car has lived a pampered life and doesn’t require any money to be spent on it. The car at the moment is running on the correct optional extra alloys of the period but I have kept the original steel wheels and hub cabs that the car came with. Both sets of wheels can be supplied with the car. Also the rest of the road tax will be included within the sale (ends 29/2/12, 7 months left), given that I get the asking price. As for the MOT it cannot be done yet as it doesn’t expire till 17/9/11 and it can’t be done over a month early, otherwise I would have had that done. This isn’t really an issue as this car would fly through an MOT, and may well still be doing in another 22 years’ time.

Given the amount that has been spent and the overall condition of the car, taking into account of the low mileage too, I feel £2650 is a very fair and competitive price for this car and I believe the first person to view this car will buy.

Also I have a private number plate for sale “G8 VLV”, standing for Golf 8 Valve. I purchased this around the time I bought the car and would like £350 for it (this includes the assignment fee of £80 which has already been paid).

If you are interested in this car please either email at [email protected] or leave an answerphone message on 07977110701 and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Very tidy. I hope the buyer is interested in keeping original. Would be ideal for tv work wanting a car from late 80s.

Buy it, slam it on some TA Technix and some banded steels and ruin it..lol

Awesome car, not much work to be a concourse show car by the looks of it.

Your both right! I thought about slamming it but its purity won me over to keep it standard :)

Hi everyone, just to inform you the car will be going up for sale on Pistonheads and possibly Auto Trader this weekend.

It's a shame it hasn't got power steering as I know from experience you need fairly strong arms when parking.I had a 'GL' 1800 without P/S for quite a few years and then changed to a '91 GTI with P/S. The steering improvement was a revelation ! There was a downside though - the wife found she could drive it without any problems whereas she couldn't drive the GL because of the high steering effort required.

I personally beg to differ. I know from experience that these cars are easily drivable as my 70 year-old, 4ft-6 granny drove a MK2 for several years..

Although the thought of power assisted steering is nice, once past 5-10 mph the steering is light enough anyway. I hear after replacing the power steering belt it’s hard to set it up back to the correct lightness and feel. Less to go wrong.

And if the idea puts off potential buyers, its not the end of the world as it can be simply retro fitted for less than £100 as all you would need is the power steering rack, pump and reservoir.

The non P/S MK 2 GTIs with slightly wider tyres need a bit of muscle power at low parking speeds. The addition of P/S would be a good improvement.

Whether or not it's got power steering is neither here nor there...

It's a bloody nice example and a credit to it's owner

Best of luck with the sale fella

Damo

Glad to see we have some other Mk2 fans on Briskoda  Here's some pics of mine.

I think you have asked for a fair price for the car considering the condition, originality and the list of work you have done. Good luck with the sale!

P.S. Decided to get the car MOT'd early this week (W/C 1st Aug) so the potential buyer won't have to be troubled.

Part Exchange: Possibly a tidy, silver, low mileage (-60k) MK1 Octavia VRS

Looks like a great car - would love that to run as an original concourse car but swmbo would slaughter me!

  • Author

it is a great car! :)

let me know if you change your mind! cheers, marc

This is a very tidy example. Remember my dads F reg in blue. Oh the memories and the fun we had  If I had the room I'd love her but unfortunately I don't.

Yeah they are fun cars!

Got a couple of people coming to see it this weekend so hopefully get the price that I'm after..

still trying to find some low mileage mk1 octy vrs's in good nick.

Lovely example you have there. I had one before I moved onto my mk2 Octy.

4door but 16v in the perfect colour pearl grey. I love the way these cars drive, very raw and handles great. Not the most comfortable but definitely a fun car. I'd have one again in a heartbeat as a project if I had the spare cash. Mine was nowhere near as good condition as yours though, wish you all the best in selling it, looks mint!

  • Author

Pearl Grey? You mean Atlas Grey? Looks like a tidy valver that.

Nope not atlas it was pearl grey! Paint code LA7U. Believe me I thought it was atlas too, but if you look at the rear door you'll notice that it's a slightly lighter shade than the rest of the car, that door was taken and replaced from an atlas grey car as my original one was rusting. There's not much in it, but it is a deeper shade.

Seeing these pics of mk2s again makes me want to get another, would love a mint example like yours fella but lack of funds tell me no lol. Best of luck with the sale, looks very very concours, would be a shame to mod that!

Cracking example and great to see some still about in that condition - best of luck with the sale.

You should enter a 'no modification' clause into the sale contract

You learn something new every day!

Its my daily runner mate, nothing trailer queen about this car! It drives just as good as it looks which is very rewarding! I'll be sad to see it go, but I just fancy a change, being a car enthusiast an all...

Get a MK2, just make sure the body work is mint like mine. You can always replace parts but body panels are only original once.

These things are going up in value too, there's a load just been sold on Volkswizard for 3.5k+ and they all had 140,000+ mileage, just because the bodies were rust free. So even if you were going to get one, you wouldn't loose anything at the other end when you sell it.

I've seen a couple of extreme low mileage (10k & 13k) sell for an advertised asking price of £10,000 in the last few months.

This is true, I watched a 20,000 mile 8V GTI sell for £10,000 on piston heads not long ago too.

Luckily I have 2 people coming up this weekend to view the car (unless someone wants to beat them too it)

Car Update - The car past its MOT with flying colours and no advisories, but that's no surprise really :D

If no one buys it before Sunday I'll be taking it to VW North West at Tatton Park and I will put it in the for sale section.

Hi Everyone,

First person came to see it today and bought it!

Cheers

Marc
