Symphony volume reduces to about 7

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This is my second mk1 Octavia and both have the same problem.

If you listen to the radio or cd at about 20+ the volume will suddenly decrease to about 7 and will not go higher unless you turn off/on the headunit.

It goes so quiet it's a struggle to hear the radio on the motorway due to road noise.

I've tried turning off GALA but this doesn't help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

M.

Sorry to bump this back up the thread list but does no one have any ideas way the volume keeps cutting out? As I said, this happened on my older mk1 Octavia too. Is it a known fault with these Symphony units?

I'm going to buy a new head unit if I can't find a solution and it definitely will not be another Symphony! :(

Cheers,

M.

In the absence of other comments I offer my initial reactions, but may be talking out of the top of my hat.

I listen at vol 7 or 8 which is fine when the car is stationary and then allow GALA to increase the volume automatically when speed increases. I rarely need to adjust the volume control. GALA must set up correctly by trial and error to compensate for motorway tyre noise but the manual tells you how.

Volume setting 21 is LOUD (and I am partially deaf!). Perhaps the radio has a thermal issue at high output and goes into a protective mode that reduces volume - just a guess.

I know you can turn the volume up to an ear shattering 47 but no-one leaves it continuously that loud and it may not be engineered for continuous high output.

Do you have after-market speakers? Some are inefficient and need a high drive whilst some may not be the same impedance as the original. Either would overload the radio causing protective partial shut-down.

I did wonder if the radio is going into some sort of protective mode. But, from previous ICE experience, I don't believe the volume to be extensive when the radio drops off to around 7.

The vehicle is completely standard, no after-market speakers. It's really annoying and it's odd that this has happened on my old mk1 Octavia too - maybe I've just been unlucky and had two faulty head units.

Check the TAVOL and ONVOL settings - it could be one of those?
