First service at 18500 miles

Featured Replies

Well, the first service has finally come up - at just over 1 year and 18,500 miles. Cost £276 from Capitol Skoda in Newport.

[Edit: Should clarify - the car is on variable servicing, which I was told is more expensive than a "standard" annual service... Hmm... There's also not a huge choice of dealers nearby to Cardiff.]

Only reason I'm posting is that I wondered if anyone else had noticed garages putting "fuel cleaner" in during the service - Capitol added (without asking me) something called "Bio Klenz" anti-bacterial fuel treatment to the car. And charged me £15 for the privilege. Once I'd complained that I hadn't asked for this, they hemmed and hawed and refunded the cost of it. But this is the second time they've just added it to the service bill without asking - they did it on my old Octavia vRS a couple of years ago. It may be legit, but it's got the feel of a scam to me, since I'm sure it's a high-profit item for them. And besides, who has ever had problems with bacterial growth in petrol tanks? Maybe in diesel tanks, due to the extra water content, you *might* get a problem with algae, but in petrol? I'm highly skeptical.

How much? You got ripped! I am due one next month and have had quotes from 2 dealers at £140 and £160 inclusive of VAT.

Never heard of such a fuel treatment, and I'd be concerned if a garage had done anything that isn't in the Skoda service schedule without my express permission. Wonder what Skoda UK would make of that?

On a smaller scale I get equally hacked off with garages charging for topping up my screen wash even when I have taken it to the garage full. NOTHING should be done in addition to the standard service without you being consulted first of all. No discussion.

I have booked mine in for a service in a couple of weeks, I am also on variable. There are two Skoda dealers within a 30 mile range of me, one quoted £255, the other £215. Guess which one I went for? I have also bought some Philips Extreme bulbs separately which they have offered to fit free of charge for me as a courtesy which is good service and much appreciated. I have a couple of things needing doing under warranty so I have to visit a Skoda dealer for this service rather than use another brand at a cheaper rate.

Why are people being quoted so much?! My quotes were from a franchise main dealer and a family run main dealer.

I assume that dealers charge what they can get away with. It maybe you have more competition in your area so the charges are kept to a minimum. As the service is every 18,500 miles or so I am not too put out, it will only get one service in my ownership of the car. If it was every 12,000 as per my previous cars then I would definitely use a non franchised dealer.

Thats the thing - there is no competition round by me - these are my nearest dealerships and they are 15 and 30miles away (well there is one within 5 miles but wouldn't go there :giggle: )

I remember many years ago when I had a Citroen (er same dealer as my current Skoda when I think back) they topped up my screen washer at a very high cost and I complained because I knew it was full. They said that they always settled down a bit (airlock) after filling and they must have topped that small amount up. I muttered but left it at that. Before the next service I topped it up and looked at it again after a short run and indeed it had gone down somewhat. So I topped it up again and checked that it remained full. Got bill - same high charge for their top up and same excuse. This time I let rip telling them exactly what I had done and without a word they deducted that charge from their bill.

Don't complain. You are lucky in getting a competitive price without much competition around you. Enjoy it.

Don't worry i'm not ;)

Always make it clear (and write it on a job sheet if they ask you to sign one) that you want to be contacted if anything else is required.

They can't just bung a dose of £2 cleaner in and charge you £15 because they felt like it.

Land Rover always asked me every service if I wanted the fuel lines cleaned. They put in a dose of a similar stuff and charged about £50 if you agreed! :o

It's a big profit margin thing. Like the paint protection thing which you can also haggle right down.

Good old main dealers. :dull:

Sorry, but there is plenty of competition in the Midlands! Look how many dealers are listed here:

http://briskoda.net/forums/forum/72-skoda-dealers-in-the-west-midlands/

and that is just the West Mids!

Perhaps you need to specify exactly where you are in the Midlands.

Bio Klenz:

So it is a fuel system cleaner as well as a water dispersant.

None of which (besides Bilston) is convenient for work as Furrows Shrewsbury is no longer a Skoda dealer else this would be ideal. You obviously haven't spent much time in the Midlands! The West Midlands i believe is 5000 square miles of dense population. The only ones accessible to me are Cannock, Bilston (Both Autosales though :() and Faintree in Bridgnorth. These are all out of my way from any of the normal journeys i take hence being unable to take my car in on a working day. To get to work from any of these would add at least an hour each way to my journey.

Coventry for example is nearly 40miles away, Banbury is 70 odd miles etc etc. You have zero chance of getting to these in rush hour and i wouldn't even consider it.

jrw,

your location just says "Midlands", so perhaps you need to be more specific when making a comment.

I lived in Worcester for 25 years and for many of those I was a rep covering the whole of the West Mids, from Worcester in the South, to Gailey in the North, and from Bridgnorth in the West to Tamworth in the East, so I do know the area quite well!

Consider yourself lucky you at least have some choice compared to us in Mid Wales, where even the nearest dealer is over 90 minutes away (Faintree) or the next 2 hours (Cardiff or Swansea) We just make sure that when the car needs a service that we fit it in with something else, typically visiting friends in South Wales.

And from personal experience, Faintree would have been much cheaper than the price you paid.

Haven't had it done yet but Faintree quoted £160 as they were me no1 choice until Stourbridge opened and offer 10% discount to Brisky members

PS - Oswestry is nearest to Llanidloes...

Shall we just say that the dealer in Oswestry and I have "history"!! :dull:

There is a place down in Cardiganshire but it is so out of the way, I haven't even considered it.

I suspect my second service, probably at around 40k will be done down in Swansea, although SWMBO has suggest we go to Worcester and see the daughter!

haha - hence why i don't go to AS - looking at the reviews on here it puts me off somewhat.....along with anything with Inchcape in the name.... :o

'Variable' or 'Fixed'?

First fixed service on the last Yeti 140 cost an eye watering £155 from memory and that' was the price quoted by my nearest dealers :smirk: For the new Monster I've opted for one of those two year service plans with a £50 accessories voucher. Mind when I took the plan out on the Fabia last year it was a £100 voucher :(

Me too.

My 2x service plan was £299 with £100 of Skoda parts/accessories vouchers.

Just had my first £99.50 service, my second (major) service will also be £99.50

Hi Guys,

As JRW pointed out we have 2 Skoda and Volkswagen dealerships in the West Midlands (Stourbridge and Redditch) We also have a VW dealership in Wolverhampton so if any of these are close enough to you, we would be happy to offer you 10% off any service as well as other perks such as free MOT's, courtesy car etc with you being a Briskoda member!

:) Ta! :)

Old thread I know but I can recommend Faintree, had numerous bits of work done by them and my family have brought serveral new cars from them over the years.

Definately worth your drive if you need any future work...

Oh I know that it is an ancient thread = however I have had both 1st and 2nd services done - AND two sets of new tyres - from Sinclair Skoda in Swansea which is a 45 mile drive away.

1st service was £100 + VAT, and the 2nd was, yep, £100+VAt = and included a valet inside and out, as well as odd bits.

The tyres - 1st set of new Dunlops at 18000 and the 2nd set WINTER Contis at 35000 miles. Dunlops were £125 each and the Contis £135 each.

I think their prices are most favourable, coupled with the fact that I get extremely good service (booked in for winters at about 18 hours notice), greeted like a long lost friend, and various texts and phone calls relevant to what is happening.

If i ever need a new YETI - you can guess where I will go!!

I had my first 'Variable' service at 17k.

One of the service staff from Alex Lawrie in Liverpool collected the car in the morning on his way to work and returned the car at the end of the day.

Cost was £160 inc vat.

That also included screen wash and a litre of oil for topping up.

I did ring around several dealers first though to find the best price.
