egr query

Featured Replies

Last weekend i blocked the two vaccuum pipes on the egr off. I ran the car for a couple of days n no cel light came on.

I then took all boost hoses and intercooler out and cleaned all the oil out. Started the car and the light was on, was still on the next day on the way to work but didnt come on at all on the way home. Fitted the allard egr delete pipe and have done 60 miles since and still no light?!

Any ideas anyone?

Why?

Bit back to front question this.

So are you saying you have done an EGR delete and the cel light comes on sometimes? and that you have cleaned the I/C pipes?

So if you have, then the cel light needs to be mapped out with VCDS.

The light didnt come on when i blocked the vac hoses off but came on straight away when i cleaned the boost hoses out making me think id damaged the map sensor but then the light went off againafter a 15 mile journey to work and hasnt been back on since. Was wondering if it was normal for the light to be intermittent? Could it be due to the journey to work not involving much 'crusing' as its all up and down hill?

Is everything apart from the light not working,emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif running/working as normal?

Not knowing a darn thing what you have done, I'd say leave alone and just worry if light comes back-on. ?

Get the car scanned. That will tell you why the CEL came on.

theres only 1 pipe on the egr?

The other one is for the inlet flap which is in the same housing - that goes too if you do an EGR delete.

Yeah one hose to the top of the egr and another to the plastic thing that controls the flap. Just wondering why the cel hasnt come on properly as it is supposed to with the delete? Iv done about 150 miles of.motorway today n still no light...weird

If this is the ASZ engine, you only block off the vacuum hose that goes to the EGR (top most hose) The other is for the ASV valve and should be left connected.

sorry 2 butt in guys but was thinking of blocking this pipe 2 the egr as lots of you do, can you tell me what the benifits of doing this ??? less smoke, better mpg, more power..???? what? thanks guys.

Positives, eliminates soot build up in the intake manifold, which goes gunky when mixed with the PCV vapor.

Negatives, increased Nox (bad for everyone), increased engine temps at steady cruise (may increase valve wear), slightly lower MPG at cruise speeds and idle.

really !!??, dont think i'll bother then, dont like the sound of the negatives, thanks for the reply, anyone else got anything 2 say about it??

If you do the 'elephant Hose to oil catch can mod' the EGR side won't cause a problem, as all you have is the soot, with no oil vapor to gum it up. EGR delete will be an MOT fail soon, as will a CEL light. Of course it's simple to unplug the hose for the MOT and clear the CEL light, but IMHO bypassing the EGR is not a particularly good idea. EGR only operates at idle for two minutes, and at steady light load cruise speeds, at all other times, the ECU turns it down to about 4% duty cycle.

The delete pipe removes the whole lot that both pipes connect to. Cars driving sweet with no rough idling or anything. Iv also read about when the ASV is removed switching the engine off becomes more of a stall...but its still switching off the same?!
