RWD VRS

Featured Replies

Ok so yes my plan is to convert a VRS I can get my hands on for cheap money to rear wheel drive.

In fact I will be transplanting the engine to the back of the car. Basically using all the front end underneath parts up the back and making a new front end to bridge the gap.

This idea was the easiest option given our one on the list was to twin engine it lol.

Has anyone ever seen one done or attempted it?

Dave.

Seems a lot of Fu**ing around to me....

Will be interested to follow this though!

Good luck!!!!

Steve

This is easy to do

1) Buy Octavia 4x4

2) Unbolt front driveshafts

3) Put an old lawnmower engine in the boot

Now you have a rear-wheel drive Octavia with an engine in the boot :smirk:

A few years someone came up wirth this idea, they gave up before starting iirc

A 2WD Octavia would be a terrible car to choose for this type of project - the rear beam suspension proving the biggest problem

A 4WD chassis would be far more logical - already has prop to rear, already has trailing arm independant suspension

Moveing the engine to rear sounds like a terrible idea - even ignoring the engineering issues, you'd end up with a terrible weight distrodution

If you really did want to proceed, I'd suggest cutting out the entire floorplan, and then mount the Octavia bodyshell on a custom tubular frame chassis

Mid-mount the engine behind the drivers seating for better weight distrodution, with a short prop to a quaife gearbox+plate diff unit

Aim for a curb weight of about < 800Kg with a 200bhp 20v would give you roughly 250bhp/tonne

Or following on with the tubular theme go for the TT RS 5 cylinder engine behind the driver instead :D

What a waste of engine that would be !

The only acceptable location for one of those engines is in the front of my 4x4 B)

Had a good look round one of engine the other day, poor thing was wasting away under the hood of an RS3

One of those with one of Steve's billet GTX3076R's bolted-on would rock

If my 6 numbers come up I'm keeping mine and dropping a YB cosworth lump in it :-)

My choice would be an r32 or r36 lump twin turbo'd

This is meant to be a budget have a laugh project not a £30k plus build lol. Trust me putting the engine in the back is a piece of **** to do! Done it before with a car and the Octavia floor pan is perfect for this. Yes the rear will be 'space frame' to some extent but will re-use most of the front end parts.

We won't be trying to make the car handle like a 911 or anything just a bit of fun to do something with a cheap as chips Vrs really.

Dave

Still recon a 4x4 would make a far more logical base to work from

If you're going to be making sections of space frame it would be fairly easy to rotate the engine 90degrees and mid-mount

Use the left driveshaft output to connect upto the rear drive - strip the haldex clutch out and connect upto the rear transverse diff

You'd have to fabricate a new prop basically, but this would be compensated by not having to work out how to mount up the front-wheels/driveshafts/etc to the rear.

As for cost, often 4x4 are cheaper than vrs

The location of the 4x4s' fuel tank might make the job easier too.

Can see your thinking but this Vrs has cost £1k all in lol.

What are you gaining by doing it.

What are you gaining by doing it.

All I can think of is going though a hedge backwards, aka early porche 911's :giggle:

If you have managed to buy a vrs for a grand you can make cash breaking it and then you can buy a rwd car and save yourself alot of hasstle

If you want a rear drive car buy a BMW or if you want a rear drive car with the engine in the back buy a Porsche

A modded Skoda will never be up to par!

Can a mod please close this thread down. I seriously have had enough!

If you really want, yes, but I think there's some fair points made.

I for one am interested in seeing what you do with this and would love to see a build thread.

Don't get disheartened by the lack of enthusiasm on here dude

The Skoda scene isn't really into hardcore experimental modding

I can see that your project is probably more about the challenge of the build and engineering involved, rather than making a supercar

Just look at some of the hotrods, choptops and other completely custom cars people build - very cool, but completely useless for anything other than looking at

At the end of day, if you get half way the conversion, and find you've run out of time/money/enthusasm, so what ? You'll still have a bunch of components you can sell on, & you'll have gain alot of experrience along the way.

Finally someone sees my thinking and not do this do that instead!

A friend of mine built a mid engined vauxhall nova rally car many years ago,he put a red top in the back & it was a hell of a bit of kit,he did have deep pockets though,id be very interested to see your project as it takes shape, lots of pics as you go along please.nothing wrong with wanting to do something different!

I alway remember the first "twin engine" conversion I saw was the mk1 scirocco. Went like stink.

+1 on what SnowMuncher said its good to try different things even if just for a laugh.

If we were going to be sensible then we would buy the car and just drive it but we aren't that sensible on here are we :D

If you've got the cash and the technical expertise / equipment, go for it. Particularly as the donor car is so cheap anyway.

Should be a lot of fun, and as a project a damn sight more interesting than the usual "I've fitted new alloys and a wire mesh grill, what do you all think?" type thread.

Don't forget, this thread is, or will be, useless without pictures. :giggle:

Enjoy yourself.
