Mileage again - amazed !

Featured Replies

Just got back from a weekend away with younger son (27). From Scarborough over to Cheshire where we watched the Aston Martin Owners Club race meeting at Oulton Park (excellent). Then down to Farnham (via a Travelodge) to view student accommodation ready for September for him. Drove back this afternoon. 335 miles, virtually all motorway, son driving a lot of the time at **** (let's just say significantly over 70). Average consumption in my 140 bhp 2L 4x4 diesel ? 46.7 !!!:rofl:

Onboard computer (OBC) or brim to brim manual calculation?

Sounds high for a 170bhp 4x4 at high speed...

I hope its accurate as that would be mightily impressive

Yes, it is by Maxidot and I've done 29,000 miles. Mega impressive given my son's driving!! ;)

Managed to achieve a fill to fill 46.8 from the Cube while operating in the Alps with four on board but I think I must have been doing more down hill than up :D Worst fill to fill being a dismal 35 with the softbox fitted driving through France and Belgium :S

Not at all, that's exactly what I'd be expecting (and have frequently achieved and/or bettered) on that kind of trip.

That is not unusual, as long as the bursts on the motorway were not very significantly above the mentioned legal 70 mph. It is close to my average day-to-day result is with the 170.

Mine too (48+ on maxidot, so presumably at least 45 in the real world). This is why in another thread re the best 4x4 engine, I pushed the 170 as both powerful and surprisingly economical in all conditions.

My 140bhp Octavia Scout can only dream of mid to late 40's.

That's an hour commute on a free flowing A road at between 70 - 80mph.

Late 30’s very early 40’s are as good as it ever gets.

I'm always very wary of forum MPG claims, especially those quoting purely OBC data. I can tell my car takes perverse enjoyment by telling me I'm regularly in the 50's at the same time a physical calculation between fills up reveals the real life MPG.

My maxidot was out by 10%, which I have had corrected, so probably I guess yours is possibly nearer 43mpg, but what is 2mpg between us ....emoticon-0136-giggle.gif Gizzmo68's Superb CR170 was also out by 10%.....

Mine was reading 7% optimistic over the first 1000 miles, have now made a correction using VCDS and will be keeping a further check.

The MPG figures from the Maxidot should be treated with care.

Try this experiment. Note the Maxi MPG for a frequent journey. On the next trip Reset the MPG half way through the journey and see the change in readings.

The reset MPG starts at 200mpg and works downward, so the final readings can be very different as the "summation" starts from a different base.

Very chuffed last weekend with mine.

Left Battersea and went out of London, A4, M4, M25, into Rickmansworth and managed 58.1mpg with the A/C ON!!

I don't drive "conservatively" shall we say :giggle:

I'm not surprised as that route is quite flat......emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I collected my Yeti on Saturday with 1.5 miles on the odometer. I filled it to the brim and did a few local bits and pieces running about. Monday I went to Northumberland from St Helens, I got 39.9 on the maxidot, most of the journey was on motorways with cruise control set at 75mph. On the journey home I got 35 mpg but had the cruise set at 80mph and a head wind.

Today I drove very gently, did not rev over 1500 rpm in any gear except on the motorway where I stuck to 70 mph, the maxidot read 50.4 mpg.

So I am guessing if I want to push on I have to pay for more fuel, go steady and set off earlier I will use less fuel!

I can't wait to stick the caravan on the back, I am guessing high teens for mpg?

Yeti is a 170 tdi

Can't speak for a diesel Yeti specifically, but I think the more you drive, the more loosen the engine becomes and you will average higher mpg.

Mine is getting better and better mpg since 5000 miles (the OBC seems to be spot on, poss 1-2% different to real world calculations)

In my head I very quickly dismissed the Yeti from my future car purchase shortlist due to my assumption that MPG would be worse than my Scout due to its less favorable wind resistance.

Seems I am wrong. My current daily hack (1999 90bhp Peugeot 306 D - non turbo) ranges from anywhere between 43 and 50 mpg.

If a 4x4 170bhp Yeti can at least match this, possibly better it then I would be mightily impressed!

As I have posted in other threads, I get significantly better mpg from my 170 Yeti than I used to get in my Scout.

Over the last 7 or 8 years I have had many diesel cars, I had a tdi Passat, over 130,000 miles in three years it averaged 44 mpg, this was for the life of the car as I never reset the trip computer, life included motorway, A road, local and towing a 1500kg caravan on a regular basis. (car got better with age)

After this I had a Mitsubishi Grandis Turbo Diesel, this also did over 100,000 miles and regularly returned 42 mpg, even though oil and water consumption were at about a litre of each a week when it was traded in :o

After this I had an Audi A4 Avant 140CR engine new shape, It too has done 115,000 miles in three years, towed, been thrashed and also driven sensibly, this car has achieved an average of 46mpg.

I now have the Yeti and I hope this will also at least average 44mpg over the next three years and 120,000 miles or there abouts. Let's see how it goes.

Same kind of story here. On my regular commute to work (about 18 miles) which involves a climb over the Pennines, followed by some city driving, I'm averaging low/mid 40s. When I drive on flatter ground at town speeds (but moving, not stuck in jams) I'm seeing figures into the 50s. On a long run, motorways etc (such as the best part of 2000 miles on my ski trip to France earlier this year ... up in the 80+mph range all the way) 48-50mpg is normal. Just coming up to 20k miles in total.

1.4 TSI - last tankful 45.6 to the gallon overall - a brim-to brim-measurement with town, motorway, country lanes including a 12 miles each way commute from cold every working day. Maxidot showed 46.9.

Our first full tank this week yielded 34mpg which for a 1.4 manual isn't great. The driving was a mixture of Mway, A roads and a fair bit of local driving. The car only has 2300 miles on the clock so hopefully it will loosen up soon!

Once again very impressed with town fuel consumption.

I drove from Croydon, past the burnt out Reeves Corner from Tuesday's riots, to Norwood, across to Wimbledon, then to East Sheen, then along the A4 and along the Kings Road to Sloane Square, then back home via Battersea Bridge, Clapham South, Streatham, South Norwood & back to Croydon. A distance of 37 miles, at an average of 18mph, taking 2 hours 6 minutes at an astonishing 39.3mpg. Bearing in mind that that figure will be very realistic having had the consumption figure adjusted by 10%. Stop/start town driving with a mixture of 20, 30 & 40mph limits and quite a bit of time driving along at just a few mph along the Kings Road at 9pm....Not bad for a DSG remapped diesel.
