You don't need dust shields. If you take them off, you do sometimes get more water on the discs. Just take off both of them rather than only one.

Although that photo looks like you've only got half the shield there? They normally cover more or less everything the caliper doesn't if you have them.

PIC WAS JUST TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME IDEA WHAT I WAS ON ABOUT,

IL TAKE THEM BOTH OFF , CHEERS

I took mine off.

Sorry, but I disagree.

You do need dust shields on the front on FWD cars.

WHY?

Think about it, if your CV boot splits, where is all that grease going to get thrown on to? - the disc! Goodbye brakes on that side of the car.

Similarly, if a driveshaft oil seal starts weeping a bit of oil where does it end up? - on the disc!!!

I used to work at a Vauxhall main dealer when the Vectra was launched in 1995/6 and there was a safety recall because of a gearbox seal being slightly misaligned. What happened was it leaked oil on to the driveshaft and it got thrown on the hub/disc area. If these cars had not had dust shields on them I am pretty sure that there would have been some pretty bad accidents as the car would have lost its brakes on that side!

Then again, I have run cars with them removed when they have rusted through emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

But for the sake of about £20 for a replacement, is it worth it?

Fair points Andy. I just don't have the option of running them with my Merc discs so they had to go.

Yep - if it was that important, it would be an MoT failure point.

I have had a CV boot split on me (on a car that had 20K on the clock and we had owned since 6 months old) and when you see the amount of grease that ended up all over the inside of the wheel I am glad the car had the dust shields on.

But, as I said, I have done many thousands of miles without them on, as they usually rust through. It is the kind of job I would leave until you needed to remove the disc for some other work and then replace it. They also make a nice mess of alloys if they come loose at speed on a long journey and you don't notice for a while!
