Towing with a Roomster Scout

Featured Replies

With the pending insurance and tax renewal of the Fabia, I am still wrangling with the idea of taking it off the road for the short term.

I am still keen to do the odd track event and have considered getting a towbar fitted to the Roomster and hring a trailer to tow the Fabia for said track days.

I have zero knowledge about towing weights etc, but applying a bit of common sense suggests this may not be a possibilty. Here's my theoretical numbers

Fabia Kerb weight 1315kg

XYZ car carrying trailer load weight 1500kg (so fabia on it Ok)

XYZ car carrying trailer gross weight 2000kg (assumin this means the trailer unlaiden weighs 500kg??)

Towing weight of the Roomster Scout 1.9tdi = 1200kg (braked) assume that means it's a no-no

Any advice or information welcome

I'd not swear your numbers are exactly right, but your reasoning is correct; you need the loaded trailer weight to be <= towing weight of car.

Firstly you need to specify exactly which model you are comparing or considering, then look at:

I think your figures might not be correct.

Thank you.

This >>>> Skoda Roomster Scout 1.9 105bhp 2008 1255 1067 50 1200 Towing this >>> 1.9 TDi 130bhp 2003 1315 1118 on a trailer.

hope that makes sense

So, in short, the Furbie weighs more than the Roomie's braked towing weight, before you put a trailer under it.

Roomster 1.9.

Kerb weight 1255kg

Max towing capacity 1200kg

So if your trailer plus it's load exceeds 1200kg you are illegal.

Your figures suggest that the Fabia in itself is greater than this and you haven't factored in the weight of the trailer.

If you did it and got caught you could be done on several charges, from no insurance to an overloaded vehicle, and potentially risk loosing all of them!

I think you need to rethink either the towing vehicle or your track day use. Sorry!

I thought as much.

So does the same rule apply when towing a broken down vehicle then?

Interesting question, however we always advise our members that you should only be towing to a "place of safety", and to then let a professional take over.

The rules on what you can and can't use have changed, so tow ropes are now out, and poles should only be used.

Dolly's can only be used in certain situations, with speed and distance limits, ditto A-frames.
