Trust my Gut, Or my Trip Computer?

Featured Replies

Yes yes yes... I know the computers optimistic (I'll nip that flaming in the bud) ;)

The thing is... My Furby normally flicks the fuel light on around 70 / 65 perceived miles left in the tank..

I've never run out of fuel, but the most I've ever pushed it is 505 miles from a tank.. and that's driving down to the computer telling me I've 5 miles left in tank the the needle pretty much on the floor...

I've covered 460 miles on this tank... I've not got a fuel light yet, I'm not in the red and the computer says I've got 70 miles left in the tank... In fact, it did read 65 and then it went back UP!

Should I push it as far as it'll go? Or fuel up....

Anyone got an explanation for the optimistic readings? I've had the car 3 years and it's never been this economical before, and if anything I've been heavier footed than I used to be.

push it to empty..... then let me know how much I can get away with

Maybe you just forgot how efficiently you were driving. :D

If you are not sure, I'd fill it up and see if it takes less than usual.

Not a furbie, but my Octy's reporting better than usual range too, and that is born out by the slightly lower volume (about 5% less) added at the last fillup.

They can all go further than the trip will have you believe - however it is never a good idea to run a car that low on fuel, especially the older they get as you can then start sucking up all of the crap in the bottom of the fuel tank

I've done 30 miles on zero. You can quite happily push it to zero, then fill up, without worrying about actually running out. :)

I've ran for a while on zero too

Yeah I have been on 0 and drove another 10 miles a couple of times before :)

Has anyone noticed the fuel gauge seems to be affected by direct fuel consumption?

Recently i've noticed that when putting my foot down my gauge drops faster than usual (which being an mpi isn't surprising!) but then when I stop the car or idle... The needle actually starts creeping back upward.

It's like it goes into 'sipping mode' and recalculates accordingly hahaha!

My trip under reads for some reason lol I think it's cause I don't a bit of idling and once the average goes down it's much harder bring back up than the other way.

Run it till it's empty so we know!! Lol it just goes to show how little the fuel needle shows of the tank, because on fill up, I average about 100 miles before it moves as do alot of other people so I bet there is about the same or something similar at the other end once the needle stops moving lol who's gonna try it ??? Lol

You should fill up!

I once ran out of fuel on a roundabout with 5 miles left according to the trip! The trip lies!

I ran out in my TT with it showing 10miles left once but had previously driven an extra 15miles with it reading 0!

I've decided the computers just make it up! :wonder:

I've noticed the vRS fuel light comes on and the computer says I have 80miles left. Now that is just silly if it's right!
