Should I buy a 1.8TSI?

Featured Replies

OK so I'd love an Elegance 170PS but the stealers prices are fairly ridiculous

SO

I'm thinking of a 1.8TSI. (Seem a few around at more reasonable prices :smirk: )

Scenario: Mileage now reduced. Say about 8-10,00 per year. Town & country. Capable of towing a small car trailer & a classic Mini. Otherwise two dogs & suitable for rough tracks & hills in the snow.

Boot appears reasonable for hobbies such as mountain biking. climbing, hillwalking & etc.

What do the panel consider?

Yes, do it! Loving mine :-)

I have a 170 Elegance on order and am now on my third Octy 170 vRS ... so I am biased ... but I drove my dealers 1.8TSI demo model, it felt gutless to me. As someone who tows a lot I wouldn't fancy hitching my caravan to the back of the 1.8 as it took a lot of stirring of the gearbox to get it moving. Not having driven a petrol car for many years I have to admit I was maybe not driving it to best advantage.

I had no intention of buying a petrol model, I was purely driving it to get a feel for the Yeti as obviously I know the engine I am getting well.

Hi,

if your doing lowish miles and looking at buying second hand, then this option could make more sense than a new diesel 170. Particularly as you've noticed there's a few about at the moment, some of which are very reasonably priced.

Only consideration will be the higher road tax, insurance and continued greater depreciation than a diesel counterpart but a fun car to own at the end of the day.

All the best with your deliberations,

TP

1.8 TSI certainly should not feel gutless, mine isnt its almost on par with my previous Mk1 Octavia vRS. 160hp and 250Nm torque from 1,500-4,500rpm,puls like a diesel from low revs up to the red line, great engine. Reason i did not get 170 diesel was that i mostly do short journeys and the DPF would not suit me and would mean having to do a wasted trip along the bypass so it could regen.

Not sure what trim level your after but there's a Elegance spec with delivery miles for 19k;

Or ex demo for the same price

I came from a 170 octy vrs. The 1.8 tsi felt a bit slow at first but as the engine is loostening up its definately not a slouch. No idea about towing but its got reasonable torque so I see no reason for it to be a problem.

Thanks TP. Both almost exactly what I (might) go for but unfortunately both too far from the wilds of Scotland...........especially as I'd really like to trade something in.

Ta muchly for the other thoughts so far. Not particularly bothered about the insurance & road tax aspect. It's primarily how it goes, handles, stops & to a lessor extent tows.

Want more torque & power from the 1.8tsi? they remap very well. Just ask FocusZetec.......and Shark Performance a site sponsor.
