Cracked windscreen, and all my fault!

Featured Replies

Grr,

Was investigating the rattle sound I have when I noticed rubber edging under the trim that sits below the windscreen was not right. So lifted trim, pushed rubber back. Went to put the windscreen trim back in position but it popped out slightly along the windscreen edge. Pushed it down all ok. Then noticed a small bit (somehow) was popped up on the other side (odd as I hadnt touched that side). Now this was a pig to push down. Just about got it down when I thought "one more shove". Using the handle of a screw driver (bad choice of tool) I pushed, slipped, hit the edge of the windscreen and cracked it. :-(

On the plus side when the screen gets replaced the trim will get put back in place properly. Rather pee'd off with myself, what a tit.

Awwwww don't be too hard on yourself kprida77.

Quite a few people have suffered cracked windscreens.

Mine needed to be replaced a few weeks back due to a crack. emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Cheers macdemon, did you insist on a genuine skoda screen to replace your cracked one?

I'm with admiral insurance so it looks like I'll be using national windowscreens, had never heard of them til today. Anyone with experience of them?

Having that sort of day (s) myself at the moment so can sympathise  Be back good as new once the screen people have been.

Regards,

TP

Had Autowindscreens replace mine last week, most impressed, very proffessional job. Side trim cracked as he took it off, ordered a pair before he continued - just in case - returned next day to fit - now have an off side spare one!

He used a 'cheese wire' devise to cut old seal, and then a thing that sucked onto the side window and held the screen whilst he positioned the new screen, which came with the wiper/lights sensor holder already in place.

Btw the side trims should have the rubber seals flipped out, not pushed under.

At the moment the car is so new that I believe only genuine ones are available. Had mine replaced a few months ago (heated)

When I had the screen replaced on the previous Monster; think May last year also through Admiral, then it was Autoglass that came out. The screen they used had been a Skoda original but bizarrely their logo had been etched off the bottom corner and another give away was the remains of an original parts label still stuck to the glass.

Mine was replaced earlier this year.

make sure you can read the cars chassis number properly in the little "window" on the nearside.

When I had mine repaired recently (rear bumper),the guy who tried to read it pointed out that it was almost unreadable.

My windscreen has been fitted( or slipped) slightly. It's about 5 mm lower than it should be.

I compared it with my brothers Yeti.

2 monsters in the family now.

Don't know sorry.

I had whatever Autowindscreens had.

The fitter did a very good and tidy job and it only took him about an hour from start to finish.

So at least they will be sober when they fit it??

Cheers guys, makes me feel a bit better about it. When they come and he's (assuming it's a he) got things apart I'll see if I can see if anything could be causing my rattle (might as well get something out of my mistake. :) ).

Don't forget the car has been 'available' since 2009! My replacement screen (see #6 above) is a 'Guardan' but is properly 'e' marked, had all the correct fittings, the correct 'shadings and I can see through it...

I did ask the fitter about availability and he said "we have a central wharehouse that has every screen for modern vehicles and I can have one next day if my local depot doesn't have one in stock" - I gave them 5 days notice (Thursday - Monday) so it was no problem for them.

Autoglass changed mine when it got a stone chip. Very efficent fitter, couldn't tell it had been changed. Only problem was they sent an ordinary screen the first time instead of the heated type, so waited extra day.

If you have the sun screen band at the top then insist they replace with one of the same type and banding, I have known of companies who replace with a basic screen.

Ok. I had one with the heated windscreen and at the time they were only available via Skoda.

A group of people decided to use the front of my car as a seat, i was pushing the dints back out after id placed a mug on the scuttle panel. I lowered the bonnet to check the dints and forgot..........CRACK! ooopppps.

Not the only person to do something daft, ive been there tons of times.

Yes they did ask me lots of questions when I initially phoned, "Was it heated?" (no); "Was it tinted?" (not much);" Did it have a shaded area around the mirror?2 (Yes); "Does it have autolights and wipers?" (yes) "OK Sir, no problem our fitter will be with you as arranged on Monday (I wasn't home until then)

To be fair they did ring me on Saturday and say they had a spare slot the following morning and would I like it doing then? I explained that we were christening a new grandson and it would be a trifle inconveniant, they turned up on the dot at 9.00am Monday. with the correct screen.
