Manifold stud snapped in turbo

Featured Replies

Notice the exhaust blowing so popped it up to KwikFit to get it checked. One of the turbo - downpipe studs has snapped in the turbo, causing it to blow while cold. Any ideas how hard a job it is to remove the turbo, or can this be drilled out in situ?

Are you sure that one of the KF monkeys did not tighten it up and snap it off all in one go?

Don't try and do it in situ, you could get into a horrible sticky mess in no time... Whip it off and use a decent pillar drill to drill it out

sounds more than likely, wouldnt trust them to make tea....

Kwik Fit for nothing!

Similar thing happened to me. VAG specialist in north hykem sorted it for me no problem. His names Gareth and is a sound bloke. Works alone.

tkae the downpipe off completly and see if the stud is sticking out of the turbo if it is you can get stud removal tool over it may need a little heat on it

if flush then turbo off and get a engineering firm to drill it out.

It wasn't KwikFit fault - I watched them like a hawk! I knew it was something like it as it is awful when cold, then more or less quiet when the turbo is warm and it expands. I will be booking it in at the local VAG specialist tomorrow. Stil driving, sounds ****e though.

Anyone know roughly how much a garage is likely to charge me to whip the downpipe off and have a look? Reckon a couple of hours labour

to take down pipe off is 10 minute job!!

the problem is if the other ones snap!! hard job to calculate time as it could be 1 hr could be a right pita to do and take 5 hours

hopefully the others undo fine and theres enought to get the stud remover tool on the it should be done within 1 hour...

good luck

As long as some of the broken stud is showing the most effective way to extract them is to weld a nut onto it. This not only then provides something onto which you can use a spanner or socket, it also allows heat to transfer down the stud which will free it off. Obviously to do this very much depends on accessibility, but if you can do it then it is the best method.
