Oooooooerrr.... the engine light came on

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Was driving my 1.6 Ambiente today and would you believe it the yellow engine light came on - what's worse is that it is only one day out of warranty!!! So drove home feeling pretty bad, planning to drop by my friendly local Skoda dealer, switched off and started again just in case the ECU had had a whoopsie, but no good. Stopped at Morrisons to fill up the tank, and when I started again the light did not come on!!!! And has stayed off for the rest of the day.

Any ideas why?

Glitch in the matrix... :D

Seriously though, probably an intermittent issue, such as a sensor over/under reading for one reason or another. The one on my 1.6 has been on for most of the last year, for one reason or another. If you've got a friendly dealer they'll probably hook the car up to the diagnostic computer for free, so it could be worth trying that to see if any faults have been logged.

Seeing how recently the warranty on your car ran out, it might be worth asking the nice people at Skoda HQ whether they'd consider helping you fix the problem.

As for the specific problem, that yellow light can mean so many things ... best get a dealer to check it out. Something will be logged.

Good luck.

Well guess what, this morning the yellow light came on again and stayed on. So dropped by my friendly local Skoda shop who plugged in the computer, cleared the fault, and booked it in for a long inspection. Needless to say, the light came back on shortly after driving away, so is now a permanent fault until fixed, I suppose.

Did they tell you which fault code(s) were logged?

One of the lambda probes, I think. I was watching as the blue "brain" was plugged in but could not follow the codes much. I seem to remember fault code 1 or something but cannot be sure. They think it will take a long time to track down the fault as the system is not quite intelligent enough to tell them exactly which lambda probe it is that is showing a fault.

The funny thing is, it seems to be running just as well as ever....

That's the annoying thing - all the repairs I've had to pay for on my car have been on the sensors...for the most part, the car works as normal, with only one of the sensors being able to cripple it...

Engine light on my 2.0 Octy comes on regularly, but I've finally tracked down what cause it to come on now "Cheap" fuel, I fill up at Texaco (cheap !?!) everything is fine till I fill up at esso then the Engine light comes on.

I ring the AA they come out reset it, all is fine.

If I use Morrisons / Texaco fuel it will upset the lambda sensor at some point, if I use Esso or Shell all seems ok.

I guess it all comes down to the quality of fuel, seems texaco/morrisons 95 Ron is different to everyone elses .

Interestingly enough the light came on again a couple days ago, but has since gone out again, I didn't think the light would go out on it's own ?, I thought once a fault had registered the light came on and stayed on until the faults were cleared from memory ?

I've given up worrying about the light coming on now unless the car goes into Limp mode, then i'll panic  .

i had few probs when i bought a second hand vrs 2 months out of waranty, skoda did the biz,it was coil packs and this was a known fault so may be of no help to yourself.

worth a try on skoda's harp strings

I thought mine might be that, but I've tried a range of fuels and it does it regardless. I'm not overly surprised, I don't think there is much difference between the supermarket and other forecourt fuels...

It depends on the fault, and how intermittent it is. Mine used to come on and then go off (usually as I was taking it to the garage), but now it's permanently on.

Apparently it's a lambda probe thing, but I need to book the car in for a more lengthy investigation...*sigh*...

Hi Folks,

Sorry to start yet another engine light thread, but I couldn't find my original one. Anyway, my local dealer fitted the new Lambda probe today (3yrs and 1 month old, 47k miles) and all is well. And it runs so much sweeter and more powerfully now than before - possibly due to the ECU reverting to basic settings if it's not getting a signal from the probe?

Lucky for me it was done under warranty so thanks Paul, I owe you another Easter egg. And thanks to Skoda UK aswell for agreeing to it.

ps Was lent a 1.4 Fabia to run around in all day, quite nice really, and a very tight turning circle compared to the Octy.

Thanks for the feedback. Will merge your reply with the original thread - if I can find it.

PS: Now done. I found the original by clicking on Find all posts by Skodarulez which appears when you click your username.

Thanks Denis, I'm sure I should have looked harder!!!

Hmm my engine light comes on and remains on pretty much permanently. It did go out the other day when I was blasting down the M1 without the wife and kid in the car, I guess if it is related to the lamda probe that the increased exhaust temperature caused it to go out ?
