Brake Anti-Squeal Kit Part Number - anyone know it?

Featured Replies

Well fitted them today. And yep that old mooing has gone.

Very easy job to do less that 10 minutes per side. After taking wheels off. Getting the new bracket under the cable holders was a bit fiddly as folks have mentioned but went with a little helping force and a screwdriver levering the bracket out a bit.

As normal with me job took longer as i cleaned up surrounding areas and repainted calipers. I have taken pics and will do a how to guide if folks need it that might think about doing it.

I dont guess any one knows a cheap place to get this from at the mo do they?

There is no cheap place unfortunatey unless you get lucky on Ebay(come up very rarely)

can only get kit from Main dealers or TPS. TPS is same price as main dealers when i asked.

Expect to pay upwards of £105.

1J0698998 for the Skoda P/N or

6X0698998 for the VW Lupo P/N which is identical

This a pic before Balance weight being fitted

I got mine for £6 on ebay with £3 postage :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

keep eyes peeled for the lupo part no - it appears fairly often and the list of cars it fits to is usually misquoted - it is perfect for octavia so if you see one snap it up

Bump for a query. Great information above!

Does this kit fit the 256mm 4-motion / 4x4 rear calipers?

I fitted these springs on my 4-motion R32 to stop "mooing" (which worked as well and a lot cheaper), but I have seen photos with both the spring and this repair kit.

The springs help retract the handbrake lever fully to stop rubbing and noise, but perhaps these dampers are only for the noise?

Looks like lever is the same on my caliper (256 x22 vented)

Yeah I have both damper and spring fitted.

Thanks mate.

Do you think both are overkill?

I kind of think they perhaps have two different functions..so I want to put both on.

No I think they work well together.

The damper does nothing to fix the ****e rear brake cable arrangement.

The damper effects the rear beam acoustic noise and attempts to balance the noise / vibrations caused by the brake and rear beam and helps to reduce it.

This does not fix the real issue on it's own. The real issue is a combination of weak poor rear brake cable that when handbrake off, does not bring the caliper brake arm back fully home to the cable stop and you get dragging brakes this is that dam mooing sound. It can also be caused or additionally effected by a crushed rear cable sheath when garages jack up car on the cable where is comes over the rear arm. Thus again stopping the cable returning home. These cable needs changing every couple of years IMO.

Anyway the spring helps return the caliper arm fully home and thus stop the dragging on rear brake and stop that mooing sound

Hope this helps

Thank you for your detailed thoughts.

I just found a pic of the 6X0698998 kit and there is one critical difference - the Lupo kit does not have the slots for the optional return spring (like the one I fitted)

The 1J0698998 kit includes slots in the bracket for a spring - otherwise they are identical to each other.
