Inspect the turbo

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I recently saw a mention in this thread of inspecting a turbo on a Fabia vRS. The turbo on mine whistles/whines on startup and I'd like to take a look at it and see if there is any play/movement that shouldn't be there. Does anybody have advise on the best way to do this? From below or above? I've approached from below but it just seems like it will be tricky to get the boost pipe clamp off. From above is possible after some of the intake/EGR/boost pipes are removed. Also can anyone recommend a good pliers for removing the hose clamps?

Thanks.

Easiest way is from the drivers side wheel arch liner (remove liner.) Or on a 4 post lift from underneath (remove undertray for engine)

Cheers MoggyTech, I never thought of approaching it through the wheelarch. I'll give that a go.

What would be the process Once the turbo is in view?

Remove boost pipe and check for lateral play on the turbo shaft by pushing the compressor wheel from side to side.

Also, check to see if the compressor vanes are knurled over slightly on the edges where they've caught the housing.... mine were! :-(

Thanks for all the input. I'll hopefully get around to it next week. If all goes well I might even take a few pics as a help to others.

Good idea :)
