Running full tank VS running £20 at a time

Featured Replies

Just wondered. Probably sod all difference really, but as I had a 5p off voucher I stuck £55 of diesel in the mongrel earlier. Usually just go £20 at a time as its not too tough to get to a petrol station for me (Tesco superstore 1/2 mile up the road). I guess the extra 25 litres or so would be like sticking a bag of cement in the boot? Effect on handling slightly? More weight to lug so slightly worse economy? Offset against maybe cooler fuel on warm days due to extra amount in the tank?

At the end of the day, I don't care too much, but am slightly curious to know of other people's experiences with their fabia vRS'

Every litre is 1kg so effectively you have added 25kg to the car, personally if i'm doing short journeys i stick in small amounts, obviously longer ones i fill up more.

Also i dont know about you but the more fuel you have the more you drive it lol...maybe just me :giggle:

I run the car to red light and then fill up to the brim everytime. I find there is a noticeable difference to the acceleration with a full tank but not really to the handling.

I'll no doubt go back to £20 at a time after this tank has gone through. I am currently tracking my fuel usage so shall see how this tank fares. Mongrel is currently predicting 550 mile range which would be a REAL 62mpg.... I think somehow the odometer will be nearer 450 miles by the time it needs filling again.

No sorry that's not correct. A litre of diesel weighs 847g or thereabouts

My driveway Is a slight climb on the way out and I can notice quite a big difference when driving off with a full tank compared to £20

I know how far a tank should get me, so i've found if I reset the trip everytime I fill up I make it go further than putting 10 in here and 20 there

Used to do it this way, but then it's much easier to properly calculate economy by brimming the tank each time. It also means just one visit to the forecourt.

Never noticed enough of a difference to think - 'oh I must be running a full tank, the car behaved differently there' :D

I can feel the difference in performance and handling if I've got a full tank. It's 99% of the time only me in the car so any extra weight is obvious but I don't think it's a huge detriment.

I couldn't put £20 in at a time. I'd rather just fill it up and be done with it! I can get 600 miles from a tank if I vent it anyway :)

Iv started filling up everytime now. Apart from everything else, even if it's just half a mile up the road, that's extra distance that's otherwise wouldn't need to be driven. Not only that, mine always runs out at the worst time lol.

I've always ran down to 1/4 tank or less, then refilled. Life's too short to visit petrol stations a lot.

I run down to the light then fill £30. I can feel the difference a little but youve also got to weigh up the extra time/fuel/effort going to fill up more often.

Yes, so having a third of a tank or a full tank is something like a difference of 26kg. On a car that weighs about 1300kg. So we are talking a 2% variation.

I'll continue filling it up every time.

Driving around with an extra 2% weight until it runs down a bit or wasting my time visiting a fuel station three times more often is not a contest IMO.

If the car uses 2% more fuel when full and the same when low, it's an average(ish) of 1% over the tank.

So is 20 minutes of my time (2 fuel visits) worth a 1% saving on fuel at aprox 60 pence.

Yes, 10 minutes of my time is worth more than 30p. Job done.

... and I always use V power diesel too.

My car costs about 12p/mile in fuel at the moment so based on the calculated saving of 60p versus 2 trips to the petrol station, which is about 3 miles (£1.20 for two trips) away then your saving 60p by filling to the brim.

With something as nose heavy as the fabia, surely you'd want a full tank to try and balance the weight distribution a bit?

True.

P.S. Your RX-8 sig needs amending - think it might be RPM ;)

Oh, what dies it say currently? (doesnt show on my phone)

'rmp' :D

Close enough! :p

Thanks though, will change it when Im at a pc next :)

[Pedant mode] Only for Diesel refined to EN blah-blah-whatever for use as fuel in a private motor vehicle. The marine stuff can weight 900g plus. :)

I researched this a little while back, probably because of some question or assertion on here. ISTR something to do with weight reduction threads and drag racing. Removing the spare wheel, rear seat backs and running with only say 10L of fuel, means it's a good 50KG lighter than before you started.

Never saw the point myself. It's not how you use the car in day to day use surely, so it'd give misreading figures compared to other cars?

I bought a five door hot hatch with a full compliment of seats and a spare. It's a VRS, not a two seat sports car.

And that's exactly how I ran it down Santa Pod when I got my 13.6 quarter mile time. Fully trimmed and with the spare.

Had enough diesel in it to drive two hours home too. :giggle:

Full fill every time for me - mostly in order to track MPG.

Sounds about right, IMO. I always fill up (hate visiting local petrol stations as it's hassle, no one can park at a pump or queue even vaguely sensibly, etc) and as soon as I hop in it starts throwing 550ish miles at me. Most I've had from a tank so far is about 475 and it's usually around the 450 mark, which works out at just under 50mpg according to Fuelly I think. Nowhere near the 58mpg that's on the trip computer, but still better than my old Leon which used to claim about 50mpg on the trip so was probably only just over 40, realistically...I gave up working it out quite early on though, not knowing about Fuelly at that time!

I brim mine then fill up soon as possible after the light comes on. Usually that means 60-70 to go on the trip.

My trip computer seems quite accurate. Gives me an average of 47-48, over 2K-3K miles. Best tank was in theory 500 miles but that includes what was left in the tank. A couple of cold starts would have wiped that out double quick.

I don't like running the car very low on fuel. Even if it doesn't run out, potentially, you can dredge up crap from the tank and screw the filter(s).
