Painted Front Grill Black

Featured Replies

As title states, I got bored the other day so painted grill chrome section matt black. It has a slight texture which I quite like.(matches the black bumper trim)

I think it compliments my modded grill.

Also removed front splitter as got a little crushed when i drove off ramps (forgot to place wooden planks onto ramps) doh. :'( kind of like it without one now actually.

Pics are not that good as it was getting dark. Waiting for a custom grill badge(black and silver) to fit.

Ignore the marks on the silver parts as that was the leftover masking tape

Thanks for the nice comments guys....

It was a little tricky spraying it on the main grill(can't remove it as had to permantly stick it on when modding grill and mesh)

I see your bottom grills are meshed. Are those the milotec ones?

Looking good mate! yeah i have'nt gone down the route off the front splitter this time and like you think it looks better without one.

Yep the bottom outer grills are milotec, The bottom centre is DIY made.

Cheers, funny that over time you change ideas, but that is what keeps the bordom away :giggle:

I now like the clean look of no splitter, plus the up side is i have the car low and do not scrape it now.

I need alittle help , I painted my grill black last week and it stress as i tighten it up to much so ive rubbed it down this weekend and re-sprayed , left it in the sun all day . Looked at it this morning and ive got about 6 stress marks back in it :(

Why is this happening ? would it be best just to rub down the places where the stress marks are and re-spray ?

Been toying with the idea of doing this myself (I think the chrome looks poo on my black estate!)

But I'm looking to try and seperate the sections of grill (specifically the chromed part from the colour coded part), and do it without having to mask.

Has anybody tried this yet and failed?

Are you sure it wasn't damp paint undeneath the surface originally, and it's now 'pickling' because of it? Just a thought...

Can't really tell without pics. Paint is really easy to stress if not dried correctly, and whilst matt does dry quickly, it is supposed to be applied in very THIN coats.

This either sounds like you sprayed too quickly, too close not allowing paint to dry enough or you did not prep the plastic enough or you are combining incompatible paints types together i.e primer and top coat. Also could use plastic primer which is a bit more flex than std primer. I did not and was ok.

To prep the chrome plastic, sand with medium grade, then use a cleaning tacky rag to prep or even a spray prep(can get that in halfrauds) the make the plastic adhere to new paint well.

Then lightly prime, leaving to dry 15min depending on temp outside. 3 coats should do. Then lightly sand for 3 top coats. using a tacky rag to clean surface.

I used Matt so that was it for me, apart from coating with collinite wax to help help surface good week after allowing to dry completely.

If using gloss folks can spray lacquer to harden surface.

Should be easy to separate sections and that would be easier for you to paint.

I could not on mine as had to seal it in when did the mesh. So i masked the whole grill. Results are still good though

Few more pics. (without badge have a custom one in there now)
