Is there a way to work out a car's future depreciation?

Featured Replies

I was looking at Parkers and they have a graph showing car's depreciation after 1,2 and 3 years. How do they work that out? Do they work it out on previous models?

I was thinking whether it is possible that it is a bit of a self-dulfilling proficy like the present "futures market", where food prices today are determined by the 6 months price, if the economy doesn't look too good, price would fall due to lower demand, but again this all really depends on the present view, therefore if price is expected to fall in the future, it would fall today in anticipation.

Is this how they work out depreciations? and also lease prices?

For a new model, it's pretty much guesswork based on what any similar models fetch, reliability of the marque and what demand is like.

That's how it seems to me.

Thanks, I guess the market is not big enough for a futures market to develop, so all supply and demand then.

What fascinate me is whilst looking at lease prices, cars that generally do quite well (Tiguan, Mini) are quite expensive to lease, of course one has to take into account the initial purchase price.
