Starter motor noise?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

My fabia is making a pretty bad noise when the engine is turned over - is this a common trait?! It's not like I'm leaving the key turned forward for any more time than normal?

Thoughts!?!

Cheers!

I've got 2 SDIs that the starter motor stays in for a short time. 1 of them has been doing it for 5 years with no ill effects.

Sound anything like that?

It was the starter motor not dis-engauging fast enough. Fixed it by removing it and clearing the cog thing off.

Seen a few other VAG cars doing it too.

Thanks both for the replies - definitely the sound TriggerFish!

Simple enough task to do is it? :wonder:

NOthing massive to worry about then really. :)

Easy enough, just awkward to access. Took three of us to find some of the fixings, but it should be doable if you're mechanically competent and can work out how to gain access.

Had this on my MK4 Golf. It sounds worse than it is but can be embarrassing starting in petrol stations or the early hours. It gets worse in colder weather too, but removing it and greasing the cogs inside normally cures the problem (for a while anyway!). Not sure of access on the Fabia but I needed a good breaker bar to get the starter motor off on my Golf.
