Rear Window Noise - What Causes This ?

Featured Replies

The council in their wisdom recently 'resurfaced' all the roads around our area. When I say 'resurfaced', they basically dumped a few tonnes of stone chips all over the roads. So rather then driving on these roads I stuck to back roads for the last few weeks getting to work, until most of the loose chips had cleared. Now that they have, every time I drive my vRS on these 'resurfaced' roads there is an unbelievable loud vibration coming from the back of the car. It kindof sounds like the time the surround on my rear license plate was making a racket and I had it removed. It's a sort of vibration and thena loud buzzing.

I wonder is it simply the hard suspension sending noise through the rear speakers. Or could it be the centre brake light surround vibrating off the rear window. Or could it be the rear seats. I've already pulled them forward turned the rubber stopper thingies underaneath all the way clockwise. Maybe it is something underneath the car ??

Any ideas anyone ??

Thats how they resurface down my way. Just lay down a layer of tar, and then chuck loads of stone chippings down. The trouble is they don't stick properly, and I always end up getting tar spots on my paintwork, and have to spend hours with wd-40 and a cloth removing them all.

As for rear window noise. I have found that sometimes the window can not be fully wound up, and reaching back from my seat and winding up tight normally does the trick. If you're after a noisy road BTW, try that little bit of M42 south of Brum, or the M5 in Somerset. Awful concrete crap!

Cheers

Flanno; If you drive an Octavia it might be the third brake light. The plastic makes some noise in my RS. It's at the shop right now to, hopefully, be taken care of along with some other annoying sounds/noises.

Yeah, I think that could be it. If you tap the plastic off the window it makes the same kind of noise I'm hearing. Will pop some foam in this evening between the plastic and the window to see if that makes a difference. Dealer is looking at it next Wednesday. As for other noises I get the odd rattle from the dash but usually when the weather is cold. I'm not gonna do anything about this as I find when dealers start taking dashboards out they usually fix one rattle and cause loads more.

Greetings from Denmark!

I also had an irritating noise from the back of the car and I also suspected it to be the third brakelight. I tried to foam the brakelight but it didn't work at all. As the car is still covered by warranty I went to the dealer and asked them to fix the problem.

When I picked up the car they told me that they had changed the window since it wasn't glued correctly in one of the corners allowing it to vibrate

Anyway, the rattle is gone now so my nerves are calm again :)

dkVRS, welcome to Briskoda! You are our first Dane, I think. (The way this forum works, if I have got that wrong I will hear about it within seconds!) :D

If it's the window I don't think the dealer will admit it, and to be honest I can live with it as it only happens on roughish roads. I'll know next week anyway.

Had it in the dealer yesterday. Looks like the window noise is just vibration coming up through the back suspension and causing the brake light to vibrate off the window. They had a brand new 03 vRS they let me take out, and there was the same noise. So I'll live with it. At least there is nothing wrong with my suspension which is a surprise given the condition of the roads lately.

What they did discover though was a clicking noise coming from the rear left door. I've heard of other people compaining about this as well. Very irritating as it happens on the smoothest of roads at speeds over 30mph. Had a similar problem with my drivers door from day 1, and it turned out to be a cable vibrating against the door lock. They stripped the door and inserted some foam to fix the problem. Will probably get the rear door sorted the same way in the next few weeks.

Chrille -

Did they manage to sort your brakelight. Foam will do it, but you can see if from the outside.

Have you any problems with noisy doors ?
