External hard drive for MDI

Featured Replies

Ok. First of all I have searched.

I see that skoda and others recommend the segate goflex 250gb external hard drive for use with the Mdi...from the point of view of compatibilty and fittin in the superb centre console

Only prob is it seems to be discontinued and where still in stock relativelyl expensive

So can anyone recommend a different drive that supports restarting playback at the place you left it in tracks etc? 250gb or 320gb will be fine for me. I wad eyeing up a buffalo ministation but wasn't sure...

My new superb is due at the dealer on Monday :)

Thanks

How much were you thinking of spending? The 250 model has probably now been superseded, as drive sizes move ever upwards. There is a 500GB version of this available, for example - that's a heck of a lot of storage just for in-car music though!

But fact of the matter is, 250GB models of other suitable drives can be found, but they won't be that great in value for money terms. They might actually end up being more expensive than 320 and 500 models, such is the way that IT stock is sold...

Thanks. I realise that is the case, but I guess what I am saying is I don't absolutely need 500gb or more

I was hoping to spend no more than about 40 quid. I can certainly widen my search to larger drives and see what turns up but I was hoping folk here would chip in with what they use, what is most compatible and fits nicely in the centre console

Cheers

250GB!!!

I have an 80GB Hitachi laptop drive connected to mine with about 20GB music on it, car is 11 months and 10,500 miles old and I still haven't played them all through yet.

Can't help with the fitting in the console - it goes in the glovebox on the Octavia.

Any hdd will give the "pick up where you left off" - mine even does it if I take it out of the car to put more music on. Another surprise is the instant start - if I get in the car and open the glove box the HDD power light is on. It does go out after a few minutes so if you don't switch on the ignition within a few minutes of getting in the car it does take a minute or so to initialise when you do finally start up. I can only assume that as soon as the doors are unlocked it powers up so it is ready immediately.

Just a point whatever size you get - the HDD must be formatted FAT32. Windows will only format FAT32 up to about 20GB (?) so you need to find a formatting utility. I just googled and found loads of 'em.

Sorry to hijack - this is effectively replacing an iPod with a HDD so as to increase storage capacity?

How is connection made back to HU via normal MDI (with USB/mini USB) ??

Cable is available for MDI to USB female

I use a USB male to Mini USB male to connect the cable to the external HDD carrier

I don't have an iPod but the car came with MDI already fitted so I had to plug in something. I had just upgraded my laptop HDD from 80 to 300GB so had the HDD available, bought an external housing and tranferred all my CDs to it.

well it will be nice to have enough space to sync a drive with the entire music library on my PC :)

I have the Columbus with built-in HDD in my Octavia and my new superb will have the same (its about 20 something GB available if you have satnav maps installed on it). But to be honest I found it a bit of a pain to load up with stuff via CD or SD card. With the MDI I will now be able to use an external HDD with all my music library on it...plug it into my PC, sync up takes a few mins, then plug into the car, job done

So far I am leaning towards Buffalo Ministation 320GB or 500GB - they look pretty small (about iphone size) and come FAT32 formatted in the first place.

Well I got a 320gb buffalo ministation from amazon for 34.99

It comes FAT32 already and it synced up and ready to go as soon as the car arrives. Just waiting for delivery dare from the lease company :)

This particular drive works a treat now I have the car and MDI cable. Very small, tstill leaves loads of space in the centre console. Totally quiet. Starts quickly with no delays that I noticed...restarts tracks at the place you left them. Perfect. :)

I just need to make some playlists now to make life easier, seeing as I have so much music available!

BTW upgraded sound system for me at least was well worth the money. No trouble with bass and vibrating speakers and door cards etc. the Surround options add a nice new dimesion to some music, although I would not have it on all the time.

cheers all :)
