Price to respray alloys?

Featured Replies

What's the going rate to get all four corners resprayed? They don't need a refurb as such as there is no damage, I just want to change colour.

I contacted a guy that did my grille and quoted £50 a corner. Should I be able to get it cheaper?

Regards

Yeh you def should! A full refurb is in the region of 50 a corner so would think just a respray should be a good lot less. Why don't you try it yourself, bit of sanding and spraying isn't too hard :)

I paid £295 for my 5 alloys which included refurbishment, VAT, and wheel balancing etc, down here in the deep Southwest of Cornwall.

I paid £190 for full refurb and painting, so I wouldn't want to pay over 20-25 per wheel for a change of colour.

Id expect to pay around £40 a corner for them to be painted to a decent quality

I just paid that amount for blasting, chem stripping,

refurb and powdercoat/laquer. £50 per wheel for just paint seems steep. :wonder:

Ok Great thanks for the replies. I did think it was a bit high. I'll just keep ringing around and see.

TBH it is easier to do a full refurb than a simple colour change, why?

Well a refurb will include either the wheels being blasted or chemically stripped this gets the original paint off very easily with little effort, but to simply paint them will require each wheel to be sanded down to give the surface a good key for the paint to bond to, now most of the wheel is easy to do but a wheel like the vRS has quite a few corners that need to be got right into, if you don't then this is where the paint will start to come away.

Someone like citypowdercoaters(Birmingham) will srtip and powdercoat each wheel inside and out for £20 (they charge £10 extra to remove your tyre, refit the tyre and balance the wheel) they however do very little repair work to the alloy - not a problem for your undamaged wheels.

I had some very rough looking wheels done by them and they came out pretty well, the only disappointment was the lack of preparation to the bare wheel before they powder coated then (the wheels were 10 years old and been stored outside for several years so there was a fair bit of corrosion on them, so there is a tiny bit of pitting of the alloy still visible when you look hard for it)

Other refurb company's will charge anything up to £70 (for a std paint finish) a wheel, some will be flawless, others less so, some will also only paint the outside of the wheel and some even leave the tyres on (not what you want) I had a 4 month OE wheel done by 'one of if not the best' re-furbishers and TBH I was less than impressed with the finish!! emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Beware some will only paint the outside of wheel?

Whilst others as said, will chemically strip/ refurb/ powder-coat & bake/ laquer spray. Remove /refit tyres and balance, not bad at £50 wheel.

Have seen NEW sets of 4 alloy wheels with tyres (packages) in 'Hafords' from £300 all-in.

Worth it just for the alloys. !!

These tyres are normally pretty low quality budget ones (not something I would fit)

Also look at the aftermarket wheels that the Halfords chav's fit to their cars, within 12 months they are either buckled or flat spotted and need a re-furb as the finish on many is pretty poor - you do get what you pay for with decent branded wheels and tyres.

They are also normally MUCH heavier than a OE wheel.

My understanding is that powder coating is generally cheaper than painting. I got quotes last week on a set of wheels with very minimal curb wear and powder coating ranged between £35 and £40 and painting ranged between £40 up to £70(inc vat) per wheel

^^^ thats because painting takes more time, but the final finish is much better than powder coating.

Better yes, dont know if id say massivley better tho. One body shop said that unless you were a perfectionist he'd advise them to be powdercoated even if he was talking himself out of a job

Powercoating is also more durable and will not chip as easy as paint.

I've been using this company for years.

A bit of a hike but there is not many places round our way who are reasonable price wise. They have just refurbed two sets of vrS wheels for me @ £140 a set.
