smoke behind engine cover

Featured Replies

hey all have got a bit of an odd problem basically due to the fact that i have not really driven my car hard driving like a grandma desided to drive my car abit harder then normal and all was fine got to my road drove it inbetween hard and normal get to my house next thing i smell like the smell u get of burning rubber so got onto the driveway and felt the front tyres and were stone cold looked up at the front to find smoke coming out of the front grille opened bonnent and there is quite alot of smoke coming out but from behind the engine cover me and bro had a look and cant seem to find anything to the eye atm the only thing that my bro seems to think it is is that its got too much oil but was wondering if anyone could share some light ? will be taking it to a vw specialist on tue and see if he can find out whats up but just to see what u guys might think it could be.

thanks all

What is the oil level, taken on level ground?

It could be a split Y shaped breather pipe on the passenger side of the engine.

Coilpack smoldering/burning I'd guess.

Whip the plastic engine cover off and you'll see for yourself instantly.

You don't need to take it to a specialist to confirm this. Just look under the cover, as it takes about 10secs to remove.

it aint the y shaped breather pipe thats for sure as that was replaced by a silicone pipe as that was one of things that were changed first and what i was meant to say is if u pop the engine cover off the smoke is where say the downpipe is in that area somewhere down there and to the answer the question of gadgetman all i know is that when we take the dip stick out on level ground its over full by say 2litres at a guess

thanks all

2 litres overfilled, that's not good.

Only 2 litres? My cousin managed to put over 8 litres in her c1! Stupid woman thought the engine light means it needs oil and the dip stick should be completely covered! Waiting to see how much its gonna cost her lol

right its all been checked and happy to report that he couldnt find the problem checked all the pipes etc and no splits nothing so he is going to drop the oil to the correct level and as i went there to have the brakes done anyways having all that done the only thing that seems to be abit oily is the turbo boost pipe

thanks all

2l over-filled - that will probably cause you oil whipping and vapour problems, and the smoke might well be that escaping anywhere it can find a gap!

So which goon did your oil?

i have no idea lol when i got the car i had requested an engine oil change and cambelt change and other things and bro checked the oil and found out it was overfull

I'd get back in touch with where you got it and read em the riot act.

Was the oil even VW spec?

One would guess that the extra 2l is the cause of the smoking.

Definatley drop that level and you may may find that it will still smoke a while till the extra oil gets through those gaps/pipes it should not have been in.

question to gadget man i have no idea just i belive it had an oil and filter change as it was needed doing at 60,000miles aswell as cambelts etc lets put it this way i aint going back to the garage as the aftersales was a nightmare plus i dont think the car has been looked after too well tbh but will be treated alot better with me thats for sure :D and to bowders question yep it seems it was afterall too much oil so it was dropped to the correct level and seems alot better still get that same smell but its very faint but that will go away as u said but before it used to have this very hot smell but that seems to have gone away so overall very pleased
