been looking at a new caravan and the person there said 2050 kg looked it up in book and there is a 2050 but its not specific as to what

Have you tried this site: http://www.whattowcar.com/

you put in the car and caravan and it'll say if you can tow it or not

It's definitely 1400. 2050 is way too heavy.

Tail wagging the dog with that weight !

dont forget that a normal car driving licence will not allow most to drive with a trailer this heavy

The max recommended weight you should tow (85% of kerb weight) is about 1300kg. So you should be looking for a caravan with MTPLM of around that figure. Legally you can tow a higher weight.

If you passed your test prior to Jan 1 1997 then you can drive a vehicle and trailer up to 8.25 Tonnes total. After this date you need to pass an extra test for any trailer.

Hi

The salesman at a caravan place will tell you anything, to get a sale

But the difinitive answer to the question is look under the bonnet and find a plate with four numbers on it,

It should look like this:

900

1000

1700

3100

The first two numbers are the front and axle weights the third is the gross weight of the car, and the last is the gross train weight.

so 3100-1700 = 1400kgs trailer weight (these are just made up numbers) but these are the figurers the police (VOSA) use when you get pulled

and are checked, so you need to be under these

Radiotwo

The plate is at the base of the door pillar on the passenger side (well it is on my Scout).

cheers for all the advice been and checked and it is 1400

dont need to worry about licence Ime a hgv artic driver but looking at it we wanted a double axle or 6 birth so rather than change my car we are looking at motor homes instead getting my

Hence I said "most" and you are correct in what you say but its not as clear cut as that the rules on all of this have been revised several times since 1997 affecting the old people with mickey mouse licences they are not qualified to hold! There are limitations placed on these freebie categories now.

And saying a vehicle and trailer up to 8.25 Tonnes is very misleading maybe you should explain the exact circumstances and specific weights and classes involved to make this possible incase someone reads that and takes it to mean anything up to that weight. you could get into an articulated lorry that is under 8.25 Ton very easily but good god that licence does not cover driving it!

Remember a six berth motor home is going to be large, you will need somewhere to put it and where you go, it has to.

With a caravan, you can leave it behind on a site and toddle off (unless you buy a small car to tow behind it!).

We went down the same route 5 years ago and came down on the side of a caravan rather than a motor home.

Remember you could buy a smaller caravan and use a awning for some of the six to sleep in.

Agreed, most caravan manufacturers are reducing the weight of their models as cars are becoming lighter. "Lunar" in particular do some nice lighter weight models. Like Normcall said you can get an awning with a zip on annexe for around the £800 mark that will sleep 2 in reasonable comfort. The 85% kerbweight is a guidance, you can go up to the kerbweight of the car but not over it. My Octavia has a kerbweight of around 1370kg with a gross weight around 2030 kg. The maximum authorised towing weight from the handbook is 1400 kg so that should be the absolute highest figure I go with.

Good call....I hope he had a smile on his face when he refers to anyone past their early 30s as old!

anyway is there really anyone under 35 that actually wants to tow a caravan?

I am pretty sure that an Adria Altea 542 six berth comes in at around 1300kg or so and is certainly roomy enough - even more so with an awning added so there's no need to give up on the caravan idea for a motorhome just yet.

There are probably a few others as well.

I tow just such a van beaing a euro style caravan u get a longer A frame tow's loveley and i get 30 + mpg

er

I think you will find MOST drivers will be able to tow this weight as Im sure there are more drivers out there that passed thier test before 1997 than after that date.

Not sure that cars are getting lighter, in general the opposite seems to be true as legislation forces more safety related fitments to cars.

Thats true! although I've been towing vans since I passed my test at 17. My love of 'vaning might be something to do with the Romany blood of my long gone ancestors !

No offence intended...I've never fancied a van myself despite being the holder of a pre 97 licence. Have thought of getting a fast(ish) VW T5 Camper but they aren't cheap.

I tow a Bailey Pegasus 462 which is a 2 berth was 1326 klg but had it up graded to 1420 klg, now the 1326 was ideal weight ratio but could not get enough clobber etc in for more than a week away but by increasing to 1345 klg which is still under the max' weight of 1400 klg that Skoda say.It tows great and get about 30 mpg on long runs.
