Cruise control works well

Featured Replies

Went on 80 mile each way trip on Sunday and the cruise control was fantastic (1.2TSI & DSG). Enough space to stretch both legs out and speed held spot on. 10 miles on A14 with average speed cameras and it sat spot on 70mph (speedo value, 68.5 SATNAV). 60 miles on A1M was very easy and relaxed.

Where it wasn't so good was about 4 miles of straight & wide country road that had slight rises and dips every 200 yds. The car would try reduce power on the dips and the power up on the inclines - you felt it through the seats and the passenger said it was quite nauseous.

I dont think i could live without cruise now!

Its the same on the vRS, slightly unnerving when it starts to power up a small incline :giggle:

I don't have it myself but wish I did. It can certainly make a big fuel saving over any big distance. Have fun with it.

Have to say I use cruise control every time I drive my RS now, even on a trip to the shops. It's so simple and easy to use. I just leave the rocker in the ON position permanently now and whenever I reach a speed I want to stay at just tap the SET switch.

I think its accepted that Cruise uses slightly more fuel than a carefully driven car not using it... Where it does score, however, is keeping a constant speed over long distances and giving your legs a rest... Wouldn't do without it now!

One downside is when on a crowded motorway, its only when you try using it you realise how much speed fluctuations some drivers have... It gets frustrating keep coming up to some guy, overtaking only to find him speeding up and having to go through the whole process again...

Vital function these days. I do quite a lot of motorway mileage and the cruise gets used as often as possible, especially in the sections with av speed cameras. It always amazes me to see those who do 70mph+ through some of the 50mph roadwork sections on the A1M. Not just mobile sheds either (which may not be registered in the users name and hence the driver clearly doesn't give a toss) but valuable cars as well. I know I won't get a nasty brown envelope on my mat a couple of weeks later. My clean licence is far too valuable.

With cruise on at steady motorway speed in our Fabia we generally see an indicated 55mpg plus (60 mpg if driven carefully) and 45mpg plus on the Superb. That's 4 up with luggage.

Really shouldn't be using cruise only when the road is clear, motorway and dual not general A&B roads very dangerous, I've got cruise on one of my fabia's and love it but I never use it once traffic starts to build up, it's so easy to flick it back on and your off like a rocket up to the speed you were previously cruisin at, so in essence use wisely and drive carefully well until the rozzers have gone by!! ;)

i use cruise control ALOT. even with traffic its perfectly fine to use, if you use it correctly. Id never have a car without cruise control again

First car I`ve had with CC but love it and wouldnt have another without it...a Lot of the roads in my neck of the woods have more `greed cameras` than they do lampposts so I set it to 30 and concentrate on driving  ..On a long run mine seems to give me a good MPG but certainly allows the right foot to have some rest..all in all a good invention

What you want is radar cruise :) had it on an XFR and it was brilliant

Then you run in to the car in front, oh no thats the Volvo not the jag ;)

:)

Never did that, but used to set it at a ton and let the car do the work.

Magic

Did you ever try driving it straight at a brick wall? ;)

No, because that is not what radar cruise is designed to protect against.

It is designed to allow you to modulate speed with flowing traffic. I did let it slow to about 20mph once but lost my nerve with the upcoming Mondeo boot lid.

Only kidding! :giggle:

I wonder if anyone has though...

I'd imagine by the time you got close to the wall it'd be too late, depends on the speed I guess.

Could get a wall of cardboard boxes and try it though - at least if you went through it you wouldn't damage the car
