More power.. But how?

Featured Replies

When new car comes in Jan I'm thinking of more bhp!

What's the best way, bearing in mind it will have to be removed for services etc?

What power can I expect to get over standard 170bhp?

I also don't want to spend over £400.

Help would be appreciated.

Octy vRS diesel btw.

Not a lot if you want a removable one afaik - the ECU's are now encrypted hence why i still have 170BHP!

As said, nobody's got round the ECU encryption on them - not yet anyway. So switchable is presently out of the question.

Bugger...

What "subtle" dealer friendly mods can I get away with to get a little more oomph then?

Change your order for a TSi? :giggle:

Tbh, there isn't much you can do (if anything) that a dealer won't pick up on. Hopefully the nice chaps and chapesses at Shark will figure out the encryptions.

I didn't think Skoda were too bothered about chips tbh?

My local skoda dealer is a superchips rep..surely they wouldn't be offering them if they were then going to get funny with people who have them fitted..

I think that depends on the dealer.

It doesn't matter on the CR though if it's encrypted.....or will Skoda break that to remap it?

Youd be suprised at how many remap friendly dealers there are out there...ask your dealer and youl find out :)

K:)

with regards to them been encryped what do you mean by that ?

That it isnt possible or the cage around the ECU ?

I know Gt Tuning in doncaser can do the new EDC 17 ECUS

You haven't just got the 'friendly' dealer aspect to consider, you've got the Skoda UK position too, who will ultimately approve and sign-off any warranty claims.

Superchips operate their own warranty system, so if need be that could be used, if it was shown that the remap caused the failure of a component.

There is 1024-bit encryption on the current crop of ECUs, which can be worked around as numerous remappers are advertising. However, these cannot be mapped via the OBD method, as the encryption currently prevents this from working. Meaning that a switchable box (which operates via the OBD-II port) won't work.

So the ECU needs to be accessed directly, leading to the more 'old school' remapping method of removing the ECU from the vehicle and undertaking a 'bench' remap on it.

Cheers,

So Wardy, can I "chip" it or not?!

I'm not the most technical guy in the world and tbh I didn't understand any off it!!

I'm just an ignorant old man who wants more POWER!!!

In fact I'm abit like clarkson and by your reply you could in fact be........ James May!

Lol

Even 'chipping' it, your dealer and VAG UK, could well cry FOUL, and your warranty goes straight out of the window, so I'm afraid for the first 3 years, you could easily be stuck on standard, whether you like it or not. Dealers will do anything to get out of warranty work too, so this could give them their perfect excuse. If you wanted more power, you should have chosen a different engine, which some people have already told you.

Cheers,

Yes. It just wouldn't be switchable. The performance map would be permanently written to the ECU. The only way to revert to standard again, would be to remove the ECU again, connect directly to it and apply a standard map. Not exactly practical for every service, or visit to the dealer...

And given any problems it would be obvious it's been removed and opened up.

We also have test plans to check for performance enhancement now.

Exactly.

You can run, but you can't hide.... ;)

Well I suppose standard 170 is enough( it hasn't let me down yet!)

I'll just wair until I can do it off the radar!

Also Felly, what options do have i got for a more powerful diesel?

If it came with a 220+Bhp 3.0 tdi I'd have got it!

And come on, in the real world( motorway etc ) the 2.0 petrol is out on mpg and although the 1.8 tsi has 160 bhp,it is

1. Not available on vRS

2. No where near as quick due to lack of torque against a 170 bhp diesel.

P.s not 0 to 60, real world overtaking oomph.

Think somebody needs to chill out on this forum with their self righteous attitude. The op has come on here asking if he can get a switchable map and not a lecture that he should have got a more powerful car etc etc.

The 170 is the most powerful diesel they do and as has been said in this post and others that some dealers turn a blind eye and I even think someone has had written authorization from skoda UK stating that a chip will not invalidate their warranty.

I seriously doubt that given the lengths they are going to to stop it.

Besides I don't know what the worry is about waiting until warranty has finished anyhow.

You don't want to remap in warranty as if something goes wrong they won't fix it.

If you wait until it's out of warranty is the same situation anyhow, you would still have to foot the bill

Makes no odds.

It was on here, ill try and find it when I get to my pc.

I think if anyone knows it might just be Ross, bearing in mind he is a Mastertech working at a Skoda dealership

As i found out the hard way trying for more power toasted the ECU so be warned.

I still personally think no matter what if an ecu goes faulty and Bosch, siemens or whoever get the part back and see it's been opened will reject it to Skoda, I think CS were quite Ill advised on that one, also warranty are a different dept and what they think may differ anyhow.
