Made a boo boo during vrs oil change

Featured Replies

Hi quick question, today i did an oil change on my Vrs. Took it for a drive and when i returned i realised i had put 5w40 full syn 505.00 not the recommended 505.01. Will it be ok just to drop this oil out, and replace with correct spec? i dont want to change the filter again as i havent got one and id have to put another 20 miles on the car with the wrong oil to get one cheers

Yep that will be just fine.

Cheers for the quick reply. A nice job for the morning

surely even if the spec is not purfect it will be fine for a few thousand miles. ready to be shot but if it is 5w-40 fully syn it will be good enough for a few thousand miles

Just

NO!

Ok

If your on a standard time/distance service interval then your defo OK because SHC 5W/40 is a correct spec oil for a PD engine.

However, if you are on a longlife (variable) service interval, then dont let the oil go beyond 10,000 miles.

Bill.

I'm pretty sure that's nonsense. The 5w40 is simply a measure of viscosity. It doesn't describe the actual chemical make-up of the oil in any way, shape or form and that's what's important for a PD engine. It needs to have the right components.

Just because VAG 505.01 standard oil comes in 5w40, that doesn't mean every 5w40 oil is good for a PD engine.

This

PD diesel engines need oil that is specifically tailored to cope with the high injector cam loadings that is unique to PD engines. Oil that meets VAG spec 505.01 for fixed service ( every 10,000 miles or once a year) or alternatively VAG oil spec 507 for variable service ( as controled/displayed by the ECU) or if the car car has a DPF should be used . If the correct VAG spec oil is not used you run the risk of excessive injector cam wear ( many PD engines suffer high cam wear because the wrong oil has be used for long periods). Many garages as well as owners use the wrong oil .

Only buy oil that has the relevant VAG oil spec on the oil container. If the correct VAG spec is not on the container then it's not suitable.

The correct VAG oil spec is specified in the vehicle manual.
