DPF Regeneration Whilst Parked On Dry Grass.

Featured Replies

My wife and I went to the Great Dorset Steam Fair today, and as usual the traffic was horrendous and had to crawl for the last few miles before entering the site and parking in a field. When I got out of the car I was horrified to discover it was going through a DPF regeneration. The heat from the underside of the car could be felt on my legs. The car park was a grass field that had dried to a straw like appearance. I was horrified as I thought that I was going to start a fire - I waited for it to cool but luckily nothing happened. Does anyone know if the DPF regeneration has ever caused a fire parked on dry grass ?

Hi,

read warnings about this but not aware of any incidents with a Yeti (or any other car for that matter).

+1, but then it always rains in Wets Yorkshire (and that's not a spelling mistake). :giggle:

Once set fire to grass with the exhaust of a previous Caterham Seven. ..

Among the differences I suspect the ground clearance on a Yeti helps-unless the grass is long I suspect you should be OK.

Yes - luckily the grass was only about 4-6 inches long and was well trampled by the time I parked on it.

There is nothing new here. There have been warnings about Catalytic Converters on petrol cars starting fires for about 15-20 years. DPF is just the same except that it probably only gets that hot when regenerating and not all the time like a CC.

Yetis are like children - they embarrass you at every opportunity.:giggle:

A quote from Rosstech, the makers of VCDS in the section on carrying out a forced dpf regeneration:

If the Particle Filter Load is above Specification the Particle Filter needs to be replaced since the car may burn down when regenerating.
