Free satnav app for Android

Featured Replies

Getting royally pi$$ed off with Google Maps Navigation. Ever since the upgrade to v5.8 it keeps crashing. v5.9 is only slightly less carp so.....

I'm looking for a free Satnav app for Android 2.2 which is reliable?

(Brimma, I'm not buying a TomTom, even if I don't have to pay for it for 6 months! :giggle: )

Maps is always useless anyway, because if you don't have signal, then chances are you don't have the local maps.

As for free, I don't think there is anything out there with full maps already downloaded to the phone.

I don't mind the model of downloading the maps as you go, I just object to the bloody thing doing a "force close" every 15 minutes!

Navfree works well on iPhone, believe it is available on the Android platform also.

I have NavFree on the phone (Desire) as my backup Sat Nav, seems to work quite well

There's also Waze if you want one that downloads maps as required

Sorry, I didn't get it from the market but you can get it from here - http://www.expansys.com/navfree

Or if you are running Gingerbread then here's a direct link to the download - Click Here

Not that I'm aware of. Too many big words in the instruction manual? :p

I'd recommend uninstalling maps/any updates, reboot phone and reinstall. Which phone do you have?

Not had any issues, and now you can download a large area for offline use, does everything I need.

Its the HTC Desire.

If I uninstall the updates it takes it back to v4.x unfortunately. Very frustrating as up to v5.7 it worked really well.

Mike,

I have a copy of maps 5.7 if you'd like it... don't think I can post it on here at's it's almost 7MB but can mail it to you... PM me your email if you'd like it

Losing nav in the tricky last couple of miles going somewhere new is all part of the fun of driving

Uninstall, reboot then reinstall.

Could be one of the updates isnt playing ball as you're effectively patching the app each time. This way you'll skip a lot of potential problem causes.

All I could do was uninstall the updates, which took it back to v4.5.1. I've rebooted and installed the update again. I'm sure I've done this before..... :wonder:

This is last chance saloon for Google Maps.

Just forget google navigation... I've hooked you up with something better ;)

Could be that he is not rooted, i think those of us that are forget that when your not rooted some apps cannot be uninstalled. Could that be why he is only able to remove the updates, not the app itself?

I'm not rooted, and had to pull updates for installed apps for similar.

Some apps are single files and updates are simply amending lines of code rather ghagra complete files. Makes it quite easy to go wrong.

I have Navfree on my iphone and i havent managed to get it to work once yet!!...permenantly says GPS is off!! Have uninstalled and reinstalled and nothing!!

Take it that GPS is switched on in the Advanced settings?

Tried that loads of times...as soon as you try to enable GPS it says "cannot establish connection with GPS device. Please connect to the device and check settings" tried reinstalling several times.....given up on it at this stage!!

I know its not much help but UBIsoft do a super Nav package for Blackberry -usually £30 a year but with a free-trial of 15 days - spot on for the hols.
