Octavia SDI Gearbox

Featured Replies

I recently bought an SDI Octavia mk1. It was making a lot of noise when reversing like cv joint was gone so I replaced all of them. When reversing it still makes a sound like a cv is gone! Now my questions! Could it be the gearbox? If so what box would fit? I have a good Mk3 golf box out of a straight diesel, would this fit? If the box comes out I will change the clutch. Is this a dual mass? Thanks in advance guys

The SDI is probably a dual mass, but not too sure.

What exactly does the noise sound like?

It sounds like a dodgy cv joint however I replaced 2 outer and 1 inner cv. all 3 had torn boots. its only in reverse

thanks

Update on SDI gearbox. It was completely banjaxed no oil in it and grinding. I rang a few Skoda breakers I could hear them rubbing their hands together as they asked half a grand, no guarantree for a gearbox. It was closer to a grand for a reconditioned exchange box. I rang a local scrapyard asked about a Golf SDI box, he had one for €200.00! I grabbed it immediately. You don't see many Golf SDI taxis or young guys booting them around car parks late at night! The clutch is back to front style odd but works quite well. I believe if you have the time and inclination you can put a Mk2 Golf box in but you need to change the clutch flywheel etc and figure out the crank sensor, release mechanism and so on.

Whats the supercharger off? Would the engine be able to withstand it? I like the idea do you have a pic or 2 :)

I don't think there's "a kit" as such, but have a look at some of the Jap sites for ideas about belt-driven centrifugal chargers (like the compressor wheel off a turbo).

Then, if the SDi doesn't have air, you might be able to fit it and drive it using the aux drive belt, tensioner and mounts for the air con models. (this is just an idea; not sure if it would work)

I don't think the little sdi engine would take a lot of boost. Theres a guy selling Garrett turbos refurbished and converted to 12v on ebay seems like a pants idea

lol, that's awesome! People will try to sell you owt.

Just out of interest, does anyone know what the differences are between and SDI and TDI block? I presume the TDI has forged pistons etc.

Like the wife says "Don't quote me but..." I believe the SDI doesn't have the oil jets for cooling the pistons fitted but they can be retrofitted to the block.

I wasn't talking about electric "superchargers". The kit I was talking about is a proper belt-driven supercharger, but using a centrifugal compressor rather than a vane type or screw type one.

Wonder if you could fit an Eaton or Roots supercharger to it?

Imagine the torque you could get with lag free boost. B)

So....

Who's gonna be the first to offer their SDI engine for this? :D
