CAMBELTS! A warning!

Featured Replies

Quick note to all you PD TDI engine powered people! GET YOUR CAMBELT DONE AT 60K or ELSE! Don't want that to sound threstening, but I've just seen what my cambelt looks like at 60,500 miles! Its got bloody cracks / lines across it and according to my mate is on the verge of snapping! :thumbdwn: He said he wouldn't even want to drive the 10 mile journey home with it like that, let alone anywhere further.

I'll post some piccies of it later on! :D

Having had a belt snap at just 728miles over the mileage it should have been changed I would agree with Jason get it changed. Vauxhall main dealer couldn't fit the car in for service inc. cambelt change for two weeks:( )

Vauxhall UK picked up the tab for putting a new full engine in the car :( after much grief

Are the non-pd TDI engines also supposed to be done at 60k?

I think so Alex, as that 110 TDI Octavia I bought, re-belted, and sold on had already had two belts done at 60k and 120k, and we did the other at 170k as a precaution (water pump needed replacing anyway, so was no loss / extra work)

Worth checking the service book to see what it says to do for the 60k service. :)

Although my Octy TDi 110 does a lot of hard driving and is chipped I decided to play safe and get the belt done at 47k. Apparently the belt was delaminating and a tooth had already come off!!!

Love to know who would have picked up the bill for that one if it had stripped any more teeth?

I intend to change at 40k from now on.

Absolutely yes. I am not aware its ever been officially more or less than this, although I have seen something on an American enthusiast site suggesting its 40k when teamed with an auto box (in reference to VW Bora (Jetta as they still call it over the pond))

Most diesel cambelts (VAG Group) are due at a maximum of 60,000 miles - the exceptions are the 3 cyl PD TDi which in certain engines is 80,000 which is the same as the 2.5 V6 TDi

It's worth bearing in mind - the change interval is actually 90,000KM which is 56,000 miles NOT 60,000 miles.

'ATD' 100bhp PD cambelts are 80k iirc.

Most of the injection pump diesels are also 80k with some engine codes being 100k. But if it was mine regardless it would be done at 60k.

The problem is now, with every new engine variant they seam to be changing the intervals - why not just stick with one - at least everyone would know where they stood.

I'll be making sure my 60k service is done before its due just to make sure that anything that they find is done just before the warranty expires anyway.

Oh and Jason , as for checking the manual , it's much easier to just ask on here than make any effort myself :D

I know the feeling DrZ. :D New cambelt is now on. The old tensioning roller came off looking like brand new so not sure it needed doing too, but it has been. Old cambelt looks worse than ever now its off my engine!

All done and dusted now. Only small problem was the oil filter ordered was the wrong one so I'm using my old one until I can get a new one. Quick job changing that though. :D New fuel filter is in,and a fresh batch of Millers XFE-PD.

No new lightbulbs, J? :)
