Poorly Leon?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Been a while since i posted on here, but I have a friend with a 2006 Seat Leon 2.0TDI 140 Sport, the turbocharger has suddenly developed high pitched whines during the boost building and especially when lifting off. Owner says all pipes and hoses are tested okay and it has been diagnosed as the turbo, but not what specifically is the actual issue. I have attatched a sound file where the high pitched whine is clearly audible. He has been told it may not need immediate attention at the moment, I was worried about something coming off and being sucked into the motor and causing some real damage

Can anyone identify this/heard it before?

I have uploaded a WAV audio file hosted here:

Sorry mate,

No way I'm going to download a wav from a random website to have a listen.

However if it's a high pitch squeal on speed up and slow down of the rotor, then I'd be getting it checked over by a second garage.

If it's not a hose leak, then it's almost certainly worn bearings/spindle or an off balance rotor and when it goes, there is a reasonable chance it will take out more than just the turbo itself should it go under boost.

The PD140 turbo is not renowned for its reliability, and the so called police siren sound in that clip is common sound that seems to occur shortly before the turbo fails completely. Get it sorted now though, otherwise you'll need to replace a lot more than just the turbo.

my fiat ran for 30k with this sound, I then replaced the turbo (at 104k) for my own reassurance... it never blew!

gillys PD140 ran with this sound for 10's thousands of miles... admittedly it did then blow in spectacular fashion!
