Converting Octavia MK2 Engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have Octavia MK2 2006 with 1.6 8V and automatic transmission.

I'm interested in replacing the engine to 1.8T or 2.0 FSI

Do you have any idea about what should I replace?

I Think that I must change the following Parts:

- Dash Board

- Immobilizer

- Engine with all of its components.

- Gear Box

- Axles.

- Radiator

- front Shock absorbers with rings.

- Front brakes (Discs and master Cylinders)

If any bode had made this conversion before, please Advise.

Faris.

Surely it's cheaper to sell yours and buy an Octy with that engine than swap all the bits needed? also insurance would be a nightmare, lots of fiddling around with DVLA, etc. If you want to play around with swapping engines, get a Caterham? :)

Dude - he's in Syria.

Faris - good luck with your engine swap - sorry I can't offer any constructive advice. Maybe do a search on here - theres a couple of people who have rebuilt crashed mk2 octavias who might be able to offer some help?

Rob_E,

You are right, in my country it's very expensive to buy the original 2.0FSI because customs policy says that you pay 60% of the value of a car if it's below 1600cc while you pay 100% of its value when it exceeds 1600cc

making the difference between 1.6MPI and 2.0FSI almost 15000$

What's the servicing like over there.

I'm sure somebody like teflontom would be able to help, but I'd expect the 1.8T and older 2.0 to be a fairly easy swap bearing in mind both came in the car. I'd personally say that the 1.8t is the best bet as long as you can find a decent donor engine.

Certainly I would think you'd want to look at changing to a manual gearbox and if you're doing that then you might as well go to the 6 speed straight off over the 5 speed.

Brakes on the 1.8T models are larger at the front and rear (well disks at the back) so they would be worth doing, as would the driveshafts and the suspension due to the differing engine weight.

The radiator would probably want swapping to a different version and since it's hot out there, you might well want to consider oversized fans and a front mounted intercooler straight off.

After checking in the market, most of garages advised me not to have the 1.8T because it will be very hard to find any parts for future maintainance.

So the choice now is the 2.0FSI, and here is the feedback from my friend:

- I have to replace the engine with all its accessories (ac compressor, alternator,....)

- I have to replace the gearbox with starter, flywheel and drive shafts.

- I have to replace the radiator with fans

- I have to replace the whole wiring for engine with the ecu unit

- I have to replace the dashboard and here comes the problem that all used engines that are available in my market comes with MAXIDOT while my car currently does't have, so i have to change the wiring of the car totally to enable MAXIDOT features such as open door recognizing, auto lights and wippers (installing the light and rain sensor will be a must and i will have to replace the front glass), and other features like coming home and leaving home, auto leveling for front lights, and sone other features.

- I have go replace the exaust system totally.

- I have to replace front shocks with rings to carry the heavier engine, and no need to change rear suspension as it's the same between 1.6 and 2.0

- I have to replace the front brake discs, cylinders, and pads, no need to replace any thing at te back side as I already have discs and the are the same.

At the end, This will cost almost 3000$ and almost 7 working days with changing everything in the car, I think it's usefull to spend this money and time for this conversion.

Do you think it's usefull?

And what other issues should I be ready for before starting this conversion?

Thanks in advance.

Faris

seems like a very small gain in power to me for the money.

Your best bet if its possible would be to buy a heavily damaged (side or rear smack) 2.0 FSI and then you know you have everything available for the conversion.

I have basically completely rebuild a damaged mk2 vRS recently (except engine removal) and most of the part swaps you have listed above are not to difficult (if your mechanicly minded), just very time consuming. The wiring part will take some working out but isnt as complicated as you might think with the dash removed and the ECU is on the bulkhead.

In regards to the maxidot issue im sure that you can activate and/or deactivate all the features on Vag-Com that you dont have or wont be fitting so would not have to change the screen etc. if you didnt want to. Sure someone more clued up on Maxidot on here would be able to clarify this one though.

One other thing is why do you think you need to change the dashboard? You will have to remove it to replace wiring, but only things that will need replacing will be the centre climate controls if your doesnt have it and the clocks/dials.
