Too cheap for LSD?

Featured Replies

Had a neighbour use these people for a intercooler kit for his vxr, it had a 2/3 week lead time even though the first email said it would be dispatched within 24hrs but when he finally received it(i was helping/watching him fit it) i must say that it seemed very good quality and came with replacement bolts/screws for everything that had to be undone to fit the kit.

no idea what the lsd's are like, i think my neighbour hasn't tuned his car like that; he's more than dump valve, loud exhaust and 19" wheels kinda guy and probably doesn't understand that an lsd is gonna make his car faster than 19" alloys will. lol

All the references I can find say it's a helical torque sensing unit, which will work the same way as the Quaiffe (also returned by my Google). When I saw the price, my first thought was that it was actually a Salisbury or a Detroit locker though.

To be honest, most of that just went straight over my head. Because it works in the same way, would that therefore mean that the end result would be identical to the Quaife?

What you need to find out is if that's complete with new bearings of a decent make and new crown wheel bolts. As I think from past experience quaife sell as a complete kit. So the saving might not be as much as you think once you factor in buying bearings and the correct type of bolt

Would this male much of a difference to a mapped car?

it would help with power delivery and handling, for example you can corner quicker as you are able to use the power better as the diff locks up and therefore allows both wheels to receive power (rather then the one with least resistants) and thus resulting in the car being able to pull itself around the corner rather then just slide out. In regards to a mapped car i guess it depends on how much power you are running and how you find you car behaving in corners now.....

LSD Are ideal for aiding in putting engine power down. However there true purpose is for cornering. Alot of cars regardless of power levels can really get a bennifit from a LSD. If you hammer it on a track all the time, or go down santa pod all week its certainly worth popping on your shopping list. For the ocasional B road blast for someone like me its not really essential. They can also effect day to day driving sometimes implementing the odd bit of tug! My dads friend Focus RS can sometimes wander even when just driving normally, he explains that is just adds character  (One way of looking at it)

In regards to the price of the LSD it does seem like great value espically it comes with a LIFETIME WARRANTY...not sure what is covered and what isnt but still thats a bold claim. The only thing in my life with a lifetime warranty is my beloved zippo!! What caught my eye was the price of there intercoolers :o

There is a saying though you get what your pay for. But that doesnt mean that there arnt some quality bargains kicking about. Maybe this LSD could be one of them...

After remembering Jeremy Clarkson's less-than-favourable review of the Mk1 Focus RS mainly due to the LSD, I was wary when I bought my car with one. But even moving from a car without to a car with, I can't tell the difference in normal driving. When pushing on, it understeers less (also helped by things like the RARB and front strut brace that I also didn't have on my old car). I can only remember two instances of torque steer since I bought it, once when I happened to accelerate out of a T-junction with one wheel on a wet grate, and once when I planted my foot while steering around a car and suddenly ended up nearly in the hedge on the other side of the road

Very true :D One of the joys of front wheel drive cars. Possibly the worse front wheel drive car I have ever been in was a friends Astra VXR. I know it got slated by Jeremy Clarkson (Again  ) But it truly is an unruley beast. Not just in the understeer and torque steer department. The turning cycle is unbelivable, the steering is numb and the suspension is rock solid but bouncy at the same time. And I can promise on my life that even in top gear how its driven by the ham fisted god that is jezza is exactly like that in real life. He told me to get out on the middle of the m1 when I explained the better money would be on a focus st or a golf gti :giggle:

Still once it does actually stop wanting to take off and the grip is there, the power delivery is savage no other word for it.

I test drove a VXR when I was thinking of changing and didn't find the steering/handling too bad on a pretty short test drive. The bit I didn't get on with was the throttle, it was far too sudden for me. Got out of my Leon TDI and into the VXR for a test drive, and ended up nearly stalling it on the way out of the compound, and then pulling away from a T junction feeling like I'd left a massive number 11, all with about half an cm extra on the throttle. I just couldn't get the balance right in that car, and from a bit of reading afterwards it turns out they're all like that until you get a remap to smooth it out a bit.

The vxr astra is certainly a beast... but in the hands of a professional it's still a damn fast hot hatch.

Don't ask me how, the steering feel is useless and those front wheels are struggling constantly but it's posted a quicker time around the 'Ring' than every other hot hatch other than the Megane R.26R(but that had R888's on it)

nailed a Focus ST, CTR, Clio 197, Mazda 3 mps, Golf R32 mk5 and even the Gorgeous Alfa 147 GTA; so yes it's not perfect but it can go fast!

I rate LSD's very highly, from having rear wheel drive cars both with and without LSD i can tell you it's much harder to hold a drift without one.

on front wheel drive cars it helps cornering, but your only gonna see a big difference if you suffer from alot of inside wheel spin out of corners

will it help to get the power down in the wet etc

mines just got no grip at all,and its all wasted with wheel spin

so who's going to be the guinea pig and buy one? :p

I'd look at your tyres firstly if you're just getting constant wheel spin.

What are you currently running?

Well I have just emailed them a bunch of questions, so I await their response B)

yoko prada tyres and 240 bhp 397lb ft

My friend with a 297 bhp astra gsi has a tx intercooler and I helped him fit it, everything that was needed for the fitting was there with perfect instructions, they are much more well know in the Vaux world so might be worth a look over on their forums.

I run Parada's on a similar powered vRS and the LSD is amazing, dominated on track, overtaking Evo's, Scoobie's, etc. My mate timed the Briskoda session at Castle Combe and said I was the fastest too, LSD has improved my car a LOT.

Ok I've heard back from them

My initial email:

I am quite interested in the LSD that you have listed for the 02M gearbox (http://www.txautospo...f-lsd-331-p.asp) however I have a few questions about it.

How does it perform in comparison to the Quaife LSD for the same gearbox?

Does it come complete with bearings and crown bolts?

Is this the complete package? I.e. Is there anything else I would need to purchase to fit this to the car? Or is it a case of removing standard open diff, then bolt this straight in with everything in the box?

Can you clarify what the lifetime warranty excludes?

Their response:

Hi,

Quaife Use The Same Style Helical Gear As Ours Meaning The Performance Would Be Exactly The Same.

The Crown Bolts Can Be Reused And The Bearings Can Be Bought From Your Local Dealer.

To Fit The LSD You Will Have To Simply Just Remove The Old Diff And Replace, However We Advised Letting Your Local Mechanic Do This.

The Lifetime Warranty Excludes Any Breakages Caused By Incorrect Fitment.

Thanks,

Joe

Not the friendliest of responses and a little direct..

but at least you have your answer now,

the crown bolts can be reused... i would reuse them if i was changing the lsd, but if you have a track day car or like shiny new metal then you could get new crown bolts.

Shop around and see how much a quality bearings are first but otherwise should good mate

Any idea on the cost or part numbers for the bearings?

The crowns are rivet'd on, you have to drill them out IIRC and then buy a bolt kit from ARP (or at least I had to to fit my LSD).

The way the guy types is a big turn off for me, sounds like an idiot.

Typing Like This is one thing that seriously gets on my nerves as well, but if it saves £££ then I'm prepared to overlook that.

I'm not prepared to take a gamble on this (yet), however if my clutch and flywheel need replacing then I'll look into this in a bit more detail I think. May as well wait and do the whole job in one.

I think people are looking abit to deep into that email

Doesnt sound like an idiot to me, good resonable responses to direct questions. Looking forward to see who will be the guinea pig! My microwave popcorn is already waiting :giggle:
