Slight rattle on the right side? vRS

Haha, thats my mascot! basically, I did have a rattle coming from that corner of my dash, and I also needed to replace the tax disc holder.

It wasn't until I set off one day after putting it there that it cured the rattle coming from my dash, I'm guessing its to do with pressure of the plastic parts? I'm yet to spend a day with some rattle tape and sound proofing where I can take the car apart and put it back together to make it better than new :)

Thanks,

Leon

I would love to do this too but I don't know If I can take out all the necessary parts and put them back on. Until now, the biggest and most common rattle comes as I said from somewhere behind or below the top glovebox and I need to find a way to take it out and check.

Is it only 2 Torx screws and then just pull it out? I'd appreciate any info from somebody who's already done it. It seems so damn strange that it stops rattling when I push it as it looks so firmly fitted, can't figure this out...

I've haven't taken the MKII apart yet myself, but I knew my MKI inside and out, so I just need a sunny day next week to have a look. If I get a chance, I'll take photos and share them :)

Just to let you guys know as well, I have found right at the bottom of the glove box side of the dash their seems to be a flappy bit of polystyrene? its black and quite dense like the one in the spare wheel bit...

That might also be part of the rattle boomy noise you could be getting?

it seems loose and you can move it just by pushing it up.

Right below the bottom glovebox right? Soemthing which you can easily move up with your fingers? I've seen this but I don't think it's the cause of the rattle, and I don't see how applying force to the TOP glovebox could affect this part and make it silent (it it was the cause).

yes right below y you can move it with your fingers, I was quite surprised this wasn't fixed, unless its the pollen filter or something? this new loose bit I have discovered is where the cd changer / media storage would go, I have realised this is what makes the boomy noise when you go over very rough roads, and drive up a slope, or down.

the little crisp packet style rattle was omitted by the pressure of my bear against the windscreen and dash...

UPDATE:

After reading somewhere that in one case, the rattle of the top glovebox was solved by loosening the 2 torx that hold it, I tried it but ended up with the opposite results! The rattling became unbearable and it appeared even on roads where it was silent before loosening...

So, I screwed tightly the 2 torx, very tightly this time! and to my surprise, the rattling's appearance was significantly improved (reduced). I am almost sure that when when I was formerly driving over some of roads I drive over every morning I heard it clearly but today I didn't!

Could that simple thing (torx tightening) make the difference to my problem? I will have to verify after a few days driving, but given the fact that loosening the screws made it a lot worse, tightening them could very possibly have this positive effect...

Fingers crossed this is solved, what comes next is that strange sound (not a rattle) from the boot (?) like something hits briefly a metal surface... I think I will remove the spare wheel and everything else from the boot to see if it is externally (wheel, stupid stuff in the boot) or internally originated.

Both front door panels rattle, drivers side stops when I rest my arm on the armrest, so no a big problem there.

I would not dream of removing or getting the dealer to remove door panels as this would certainly make matters worse.

Other rattles I cured easily: see my earlier posts.

I can't find your previous posts in this thread! lol...

By the way do you have anything on the boot "hitting" sound??

I really believe there should be a sticky thread with categorized rattles and their cures (If any), otherwise solutions and causes are lost as threads are going on so quickly here...

So another update: I removed the top glovebox eventually, all it needed apart from the 2 torx screws, was just some force to pull it out. Then I did some tests driving on rough roads with and without the glovebox. The thing is, the glovebox itself is pretty rigid, no sounds at all and so is the pocket of the dashboard that it fits into. Not something loosened up as I had hoped, everything is tightly fit.

The sound is heard once everything is in place which makes me assume it's the plastics contact at some point or points that make this noise. Probably would have to cover most of it with some kind of silent tape?

FYI I have a photo of the glovebox's pocket after it had come out, maybe somebody has a better idea of how to cure this.
