Piston ring problem

Featured Replies

Hope someone can help

I was driving last weekend and the ESP, ASR, and Engine Management light all came on. About a mile later the engine just died while travelling at about 20mph, then died twice more while at traffic lights.

I took the car into my Skoda dealer and they told me that Oil was seeping through worn piston rings and covering my Map sensor and it would cost £1,200 to put right.

I don’t seem to be losing any oil though.

Also when I turn the air con off while stationary the revs seem to drop and the engine nears a stall.

The car is a 2006 model Fabia Ambiante with a 1.4 16 valve engine and as done just short of 40,000 miles.

Has anyone come across this problem before?

If it is only just one ring they will replace all 4 so I can believe the cost at a stealers

Something not right with their diagnosis. ESP/ASR is traction control, and more likely to be a wheel speed sensor or battery problem.

MAP sensor cannot get oil from worn piston rings, as it's in the intake manifold. Oil from ring/bore wear goes into the exhaust and would effect lambda readings and CAT.

I would take it to another garage for a second opinion, and make no mention of original diagnosis.

Sounds like a simple sensor fault, could be EGR flow regulation.

I don't like this diagnosis at all, when ring blowby occurs any oil is burnt and exhausted, the MAP sensor is located in the inlet plenum and therefore cannot be affected by it.

Then you definitely don't have the problem that the idiot dealer suggests.

Again, potential EGR fault indicated.
